    Copper on the BCG?

Sorry for another cleaning related post from me, I am not really this psycho on cleaning, just curious.

Usually I just strip the BCG, put it in a plastic jar and slather on some Break Free Carbon Cutter, which also seems to do a fantastic job with copper. At least judging by the blue puddles that come out of the barrel.

But strangely after I come back to the BCG in a day or two, there are blue puddles there as well. Not sure how/why copper would be getting onto the BCG. AFAIK there are no brass/copper components on a BCG that I am slowly dissolving away (at least I hope not) so I am a bit curious here.

Only thing I can think of might be the underside of the carrier is scraping the rounds in the magazine as it cycles or something?

Pop the extractor off & you'll find all sorts of copper in there.

Yeah for some reason when I shoot Geco I get all kinds of brass shavings under extractor and on the face of the chamber (no other brand though).

But this blue puddle usually happens no matter the brand. I spose I can just chalk it up to "high speed machinery moving in close proximity to chunks of brass and copper = SOMETHING is gonna transfer".

Brass will accumulate regardless of brand. I've never shot Geco but I still have lots. Kinda like you said, the extractor moves over the rim & something's gonna get scraped off.

I also don't bother about the brass streaks on the deflector anymore. I think it's a good thing, an indication that I actually use it. And on my x39 upper, which only shoots steel-cased ammo, I'm impressed that the cases are hitting the deflector in a single small point. I consider it the sign of a well-tuned machine.

I was under the impression that I was kinda talking about the same thing since one of the components of brass is copper.
Hence all the jibber jabber about getting false copper reads (blue patches) when using brass rods and jags.

Yeah for me my deflector maintenance amount to: "Has the brass deflector somehow fallen off? No? Dangon GTG."

That would be normal operation if you have any cartridges in the magazine sitting under the carrier.
The cartridges push up AGAINST the carrier.

Brass is a mixture of copper and zinc.

Only reason I know what brass is made of is cuz of shooting and forums like this. Otherwise "brass" would simply be "yellow metal that old stuff at estate sales is made of" to me.
