    A quick FAL range report

Finally got a chance to take out my CGW-built Cali FAL out to the range. Despite a little rain, headed out to Chabot anyhow. Figure it's gotta be better than sitting at my desk at work.

Didn't have a lot of time at the range, so didn't put too many rounds down range. Spent about half the time yapping with other folks at the range.

Tried three different flavors of surplus 7.62 through the rifle: Aussie (80s), South African and Argentine. Ate all the ammo fine, though several times, the rifle had some issues feeding ammo from the left side of the magazine (side opposite ejection). I think it may be an issue with the fixed magazine. It may have come loose while I was inspecting it after receiving it back from CGW.

At any rate I'm really happy with how the rifle turned out. I really like the look of it, but I think I like the look of it better when someone is standing next to me oh'ing and ah'ing over it.

I'm already looking forward to my next range session with it.

    A coupla pics:

A couple target pictures. Ammo used was the Aussie 80s surplus at 50 yards. CGW did a good job of dialing it in. I just need to do a better job of shooting it.

Beautiful FAL!!! I guess I'll be sending mine to CGW once I get all the parts together. Is that a TAPCO Top Cover? Now I really cant wait to get started on mine.

oh! another FAL post! yeah! and a izzy at that! double yeah!

        Super SIZE

I had some feeding issues as well... found out it was the bolt of all things. It would not strip a round into the chamber 100% of the time.
Good thing I have an extra bolt that headspaces correctly or I would have been stuck with a single shot FAL while waiting for a new one & hoping it would head-space right.

By the way... NICE groups!! your shoot-n-c's are way better than mine!

        edit:
forgot to ask, is that the tapco US/izzy charging handle? if so... does it "bind" a little when you pull it back?

Thanks. Yes, it's the TAPCO rail stripper clip cover. So far no issues with it.

            Gotta love dem Izzy's.

Yes, it's a TAPCO Izzy clone charging handle. So far it's worked as expected.

sweet rifle! the israeli ones look really original

i didnt put a range rep out for my stg yet cuz i didnt take any good pics yet but i had similar issues with bolt not catching the first round correctly on a full mag, this didnt happen all the time but i think the issue is the bolt release. After i loaded the mag i use the bolt release button instead of using the bolt handle to chamber the rounds and it would not feed right ~~~ 5 times out of 14 (140 rounds), after i used the charging handle to chamber it worked without any problems.

also the mag was brand new and really parkerized on the insdie - really rough at first so it could have also contributed.

so i dont know you can try that

Some of the Aussie I fired had FTF, but not all.

Dunno. I thought I was pulling the charging handle as far back as I could, but in the excitement of shooting a new rifle, perhaps I wasn't.

All the FTFs occurred on the left side of the magazine, so maybe I just need to fire a bunch more ammo to smooth things out.

Ya'll need to quit tempting me with izzy.
That's the only long gun that's been tempting me for last 4 years.

Took my FAL out to the range again today after swapping out the 10 round magazine with a different one. The second magazine seemed to fit in the rifle better (had a tiny bit of play vs. feeling like it had to be seated with a hammer.) No FTFs this time around. I'm digging it.
