Charging Handle / Safety Selector Problem

Newbie question, after putting together my lower receiver and parts and installing my stock hardware and upper receiver assembly I encountered 2 possible errors.

    1. When pulling back the charging handle to cycle or chamber the "pretend round" the charging handle does not spring forward.

    2. Safety selector is stuck on "Fire position" when not cycled or chambered. When I cycle the bolt i can switch to "Safe"

    Should the bolt spring forward?

Should the safety selector be able to move no matter what?

Any suggestions as this is my first build

If you have an empty magazine in the magazine well, it will normally engage the bolt catch and hold the bolt carrier back and prevent it from moving forward.

Should the safety selector be able to move no matter what?

The safety selector should be only able to switch to "Safe" after you've pulled back on the charging handle completely and cocked the hammer back/down. If the hammer/bolt carrier has not been cocked back through the use of the charging handle, then it should remain in the "Fire" position and not move to "Safe".

With your lower receiver separated from your upper, does it function check properly? Do you have an empty magazine installed in your lower receiver?

Please see this video on how to perform a proper function check on your AR: http://tinyurl.com/dlbu9q

Take out the empty magazine. Then watch the video I linked to learn how to properly function test your rifle. Once you've watched the linked video, follow the steps shown in the video and function check your rifle with the upper and lower assembled together.

Everything sounds fine. Your charging handle doesn't spring forward if a mag is in the gun. That's the way the safety selector works. Please learn how to use your rifle before you go out and shoot it and hurt yourself or someone else.

Great! it passed the function test...I forgot the empty mag would cause the bolt to stay open duh. Glad that I asked first then run out to the range and do something dumb.

Now stay safe and head out to the range when you get a chance and have a blast while breaking her in!

                    Range report please?!
