    Mega or Cmmg Lower

Looking to pick up my next lower and looking at Mega machine shop & Cmmg. I know they are both good recievers. Just looking for personel opinions on fit and finish.

I have a Stag & Double Star right now.

There actually may be more variation over time for a given brand of lower than across brands.

Both will offer good fit & finish.

If you get a CMMG lower and get an upper at the same time you'll really match.

And CMMG makes *very* good uppers - top-notch quality, and attention to details. Their chrome-lined barrels are some of the most accurate around, they are made from 4150 steel, are proofed & MP inspected, and (where appropriate) have the proper 'F'-marked front sight/gas block proper for flattops. Their QC & customer service are top-notch.

I'll likely be needing some new uppers and will likely use CMMG's (or portions thereof).

This build will be for a varmit rifle with 22 to 24in bull barrel.
I already have a 16in middy built on a Stag lower with a Cmt flat top upper, Sabre Defence chrome lined barrel, Sabre bolt carrier group. The Double Star is a I8in SPR with white oak upper, Sabre Defence barrel, mid lenght gas system and Young NM carrier group, Jp free float generation 2 hand guard.
The Mega has good reviews and is available at DD Ranch and CWS has the CMMG at a higher price, but my ffl would need to send a copy of his FFL to CWS for me to purchace it there. I was trying to decide if it would be worth the added expence and head ache to get it from CWS.

I prefer the finish and logo of the CMMG. The Mega is also nice but it's so dark you might have a little difficult trying to match an upper with it, unless of course you got the Mega upper in which you would have to build.

I built my first two and plan on building this one also. Which ever I go with I intend on getting a matching upper half.

Did you build the uppers for those as well?

I got a set of Mega lower and Mega upper receivers for my first build based on reviews both here and AR15.com. After seeing the receivers first hand, I totally agree with what other forums members have said... No machine marks, nice deep black teflon and phosphate finish, and they matched up beautifully. A lot of vendors are running out of their Mega stock so I would grab some while they last, since no one seem to know when they "might" get another shipment.
From my limited dealings with CMMG, I have had nothing but good experiences with this fine company. I got their lower parts kit for a friend, and a few miscellaneous parts and they have all been excellent fit and finish. Never gotten one of their receivers but that was my first choice before I found out about Mega. My second build will be on CMMG matching lower and upper receivers.
You can't go wrong with either, though if you are worried about direct contact with manufacturer in case something is wrong, I'd go with CMMG; great people to deal with.

The Mega has a great black finish plus, you can pound steaks with the front.

If you like your Double Star, you will like the CMMG. Same exact forgings and machining. Pocket for the rear takedown lug is also mil-spec, (read deaper). Only difference is the logo. However, on the CMMG, atleast on mine, the forging marks above the pistol grip were left. No big deal especially if you put a grip with a back strap on it to cover it up. Finish is the same as Double Star as well.

My experience with about a dozen LAR manufactured lowers is that they are sloppy with tolerances. I'd go with the Mega because it is more likely that Mega Machine Shop holds tolerances better than not (and I've heard they do).

Personally, I would look for a LMT manufactured lower as I've always been impressed with those... great tolerances on the Lauers and Eagles. It just that the Lauer is missing the relief cut for the charging handle (that I did get over, btw).

Get yourself a digital caliper and see what I mean (or just visual inspect the lowers for starters). You do not need an expensive one, $20 D.C. will do.
