    .17 vs .22 mag vs .22 LR

Hello CALGUN friends. I have a dilemma that I need a little help with. I'm looking for a new small caliber rifle to use for small game. I already have a Marlin 39A but saw a CZ 452 Lux the other day and cant stop thinking about it. My question is which caliber should I go with? I will be shooting out to 100 yards with iron sights that come with the gun. Sometimes but rarely out to 150 yards.

We will be shooting at rabbit, and squirrel mostly. Occasionally a fox, badger and crow.

Cost of ammo is not an issue.

I set up a poll so you can vote.

    Thank you very much!

my savage 17hmr has no trouble shooting 2oo yards and at 100yards you can shoot a rabbits eye out 10-10 times.

Cost of ammo is ALWAYS an issue eventually!

.22 ammo is universal.....and you can get adapters for your other weapons.....

I'll stand up for the 22mag! I have 3- well just sold my Ruger 96/22M.
Buy bulk Armscor from Sportsmansguide and it is cheap enough.
Stack up some plywood and shoot each caliber from 50 yards and you will get a great idea of why I like the 22mag. Lots of ammo choice too from 33gr to 50gr.

22lr because 17hmr is too expensive..but yes, after 75-100 yards, your accuracy will wain with 22lr.

If i could only have one, .22LR all the way. Price of ammo and avalibility of .22LR is far better then .17HMR. Way more options with brands and types of loads ext, its hard to beat that with .17's.

17hmr for the win. It's a teeny tiny .223 with nearly the same muzzle velocity and all sorts of drama when it goes bang.

I have a Taurus Tracker 6" in 17hmr - I am nearly finished with polishing it to what some manufacturers call a "bright stainless steel finish." Looks awesome, shoot awesome, and it makes the ladies wanna go on a pony ride.

Open sights at 150 on little critters is some darn good shooting. The LR is the all time fav for little stuff but not made for 150 yd shots on fox. I would take the 22 mag due to the heavier bullets and the new Vmax Hornady has recently come out with. And I have seen some CCI "Green" 22 mag that you could use in condor country.

I vote .22 magnum. .17 is relatively expensive, harder on barrels, and it looses energy real fast past 75 yards or so.

Saw me a .17 Mach 4 the other week. That is a no-joke varmint round! just liquefies the targets out to 300 yards from what I here.

left to right: 22 K-Hornet, 17 Mach IV, 17 HMR, 22 Long Rifle

I would have to say 22lr just because that is what I grew up shooting and it is still as fun today as it was the first time

I have a Savage .17 HMR. Love it. Great gun. (It will set off Tannerite, unlike a .22)
I have a Ruger Single Six in .22 Mag. Love it. Great gun.
                            I'm now looking for a 22LR.

Collect them all. It's the only way.

I'd say get the .22lr because of ammo availability and price. But since that isn't an issue, I'd got .17HMR because I love high velocity stuff. But the .22 mag has more Conk power. Tough call...

One of each. Because, if ammo isn't a problem than money isn't a problem and decisions like this are moot.
