    M1A rebarrel to 6.5 Creedmore

Anyone thought about doing this??? I can't afford another new rifle @$2,000 dollars.

A $500-$600 Howa or Savage bolt gun will give you better accuracy (And will likely pay all of that and more for a decent 6.5cm barrel and install for the M1A), and you won't have to one off the M1A, lord knows how the 6.5cm in the M1A will feed.

What's Creedmoor gonna do for you that .308 won't? If you want to shoot accurately > 1000 yards you'll need a big scope, solidly mounted. High cheekpiece, well mounted, etc, etc.

To make the most of the Creedmoor's capability, you need to do things to that M1A that it's not best suited for. You'll have to change the nature of it to something you might not like. If you must have a 6.5 CM autoloader, get a PSA for $800. It's already got a solid place to mount a scope.

              Why???

It's like welding a fox body mustang front end on a 69 vette....

                  Rebarrel

I see I'm among st loyal M1A fans and shooters. I was just throwing that out there. I learned with the M-14 in Marine Boot 50 years ago. My rifle is already topped with a 5 x 22 x 50 nightforce scope. A new Krieger barrel, and McMillen M3A stock. I know it would be cheaper to re barrel then to buy a new rifle. Thanks for the feed back

At one time, Springfield made the M1A in .243 Win and .358 Win, in addition to the .308 Win. So, the 6.5 Creedmore should do fine.

Jon Wolfe was making some 6.5 Creedmoor barrels for the M14. Another option instead of just Springfield for the re-barrel.

To achieve accuracy at 1K, the 308 has to be pushed harder than the gas system and op-rod were designed. The 6.5 Creed M1A was built to do it within design spec. Makes sense.

I think in your realm, you can go for it. I wouldn't bother unless I was in the NM/Supermatch realm (as far as precision from an M1A goes) though.

Sounds like you are there. About the only thing you can do to get better external ballistics would be to go to the CM or Swiss, or even .243 would do much the same.

                            Good luck with it!

                              I've had an M1A since circa 1987.
