    DIY serial number stamping tutorial

This tutorial is for the procrastinators and the cheapskates. I need to pick up some 1/16" letter stamps but for this demonstration I'm using the HF 1/8" stamps. You'll also need a 2.5lbs hammer to make it easier for you to get a good light strike to stamp the letter without tipping the stamp in one direction. Use electrical tape as your alignment guide by sliding the edge of the letter so it bottoms out on the tape. Don't use painters tape it's too soft and I had to use 2 layers of electrical tape to get a good ledge. You can mark your letter spacing on the tape using the centerline of the stamp. I just eyeballed it in this example by sliding the stamp so it barely touches the previous letter. The first 2 letters I stamped too lightly to compare with the rest. Don't forget to support the magwell with a magblock or some wood and stamp it on a solid surface like a vise. Hope this helps someone out.

Very nice. I was actually working on a jig that I could 3D print but then my printer never showed up -_- this should do the trick. Any tips for stamping anodized aluminum?

Awesome info, I have the same stamp set a while back. I will give it a shot.

lots of ways to etch if not Hard Anodized

Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

Is electro penciling a viable option?

This is a great post. I was just researching vinyl sign cuttwrs in my area to print me out stencils to do etching but i dont have an extra battery lying around, though ive seen it done witj a 9 volt and my guess is that would take forever.

I have great success with electrochemical etching. I already had a battery charger and a hot glue gun, so my only cost was the stencils. I layered beads of hot glue in place of the plexiglass

Awesome. A little time consuming but a good option for us cheapskates with a bunch of lowers.

Also I can print out custom vinyl if you guys want to try the electro etching.

Or for those with lack of funds and no shops in the area that will touch them.

I might hit you up for 3 custom vinyl registration forms. The 2 shops that id have options to work with in town not sure id want them knowing about my ARs.
