is there a way to reverse the spring direction on a mag release?

say I am using the hogue fixed mag device (the one that you drill a slot for a detent that doesn't allow the mag release to move until the upper is out of the way and allows the spring loaded detent to move upward away from the mag release).

I want to reverse the spring pressure on my mag release so that the mag catch is always trying to open.

this combined with the hogue setup won't allow the mag release to open unless the detent is out of the way when the upper is open, then the spring will do what its supposed to do and push the mag catch outwards and drop the mag.

I'm fully aware of the current discussion about the minimum amount the upper needs to open. I'm just brainstorming right now.

so is there a way to reverse the spring direction on a mag catch?

I designed that into the new AR Maglock system but they decided to recently abandoned it. Its actually one of the first things I had done back in 2015 using a system similar to Cal Catch and it worked great.

If you dont believe that its necessary to not close the upper receiver to insert the magazine then the magazine is always going to be falling out. It just needs to be designed into the system that even with the upper open it can reset and "not reverse spring" and retain the magazine. This is very hard to do and i'm spent the better part of a year trying to figure it out

I have designed a plunger type system that utilizes this just like you're asking but again if you're one of the nay sayers on here that say the upper must remain open while changing a magazine then its very tedious but possible.

you can PM me and I can share what i'm talking about.

I'm not necessarily a naysayer, but I'm not a 100% true believer either. I definitely don't think the upper needs to be opened to insert the magazine, but my intent right now is to find a method that works with the hogue setup and is minimally invasive to the firearms looks..

say for example, your kingpin, the hogue fixed mag detent, and a mag catch with a reverse spring that would always make the magazine catch out while the upper is open.

thinking about it now, I guess with a setup like that I'd have to manually press in the mag catch once the upper is closed for the hogue detent to catch it....

the device in your photo looks cool but it doesn't look like its work with your kingpin

It's pretty easy to change the design of the mag catch pocket so that the spring is on the other side when you are milling a new lower from scratch.
You just mill the magazine catch pocket MUCH shorter and then mill the spring pocket from the other side of the lower.
You won't be able to install a normal magazine catch as you will not be able to press the magazine catch into the lower far enough for the mag catch to clear the bolt stop so figure on using a small retainer nut like an old style bullet button or just make a new magazine catch bar that a screw threads into and install the screw from the other side of the reciever.
You won't be able to push a magazine release button anymore since it will be bottomed out in the receiver so if you stay with a standard magazine catch, you could simply change the magazine release pocket so it simply accepts an internal 12pt nut.

The most troublesome part will be having to hold the mag catch into the receiver while you hinge the upper closed on the lower to get the mag catch to lock the mag into the receiver.
