I built a rifle for my daughter that has a thordsen Gen 3 stock and a Strike Industries Checkmate Compensator. I have had the rifle transferred into her name through a ffl. I have seen that some people think the checkmate comp might be considered a flash hider. My local ffl inspected the rifle to make sure it met the requirements for a featureless rifle in California before they would do the transfer, and they said the rifle was Ca. legal.

Featureless Compensator question

Given that the SI Checkmate states that its compensator is designed to mitigate flash, I would conclude that it would be considered a flash suppressor in California.
The Strike Industries Checkmate Comp is a top quality muzzle device designed with a series of four offset serrated prongs which stabilize muzzle climb and mitigate flash and recoil.Religion & Govt. will both exist in greater purity, the less they are mixed together. James Madison

There are tons of compliant muzzle devices. I have the surefire procomp on one of my rifles. There is the Lantac Dragon, which is popular. Check out "The truth about guns AR-15 Muzzle Brake Shootout". Or just use a barrel nut. Muzzle devices with muzzle prongs or an open cage are designed to allow the remaining unburnt powder to mix with air within the device and mask the amount of flash it produces. Any product that markets itself as reducing flash would be iffy in California.Religion & Govt. will both exist in greater purity, the less they are mixed together. James Madison

"It is currently CA legal to modify a double-action revolver into a single-action revolver and modify a single-action revolver into a double-action revolver.
CA DOJ BOF stance on modifying handguns only applies to dimensionally compliant bolt-action single-shot pistols and dimensionally compliant break-open single-shot pistols.
^It does not apply to revolvers, manually operated repeating pistols, and semi-auto pistols." ~~ QuietComment

What you need to make sure the DOJ leaves you alone is a flash magnifier. Given how I've seen some compensators work, there's plenty of choices out there to accomplish that goal.
Incidentally... can someone enlighten me as to the rationale behind making a flash hider an undesirable feature?Comment

An utter lack of understanding of physics and a complete ignorance of firearms. They believe that it completely eliminates the flash report on firearms so that the shooter can fire rounds without the flash being seen. They are afraid snipers can hide and fire on police and no one will know where the shooting is coming from.Religion & Govt. will both exist in greater purity, the less they are mixed together. That's why I like the VG6 brakes. with the top full of holes, if anything, it redirects some of the flash INTO my field of vision. And others are similar. What you need to make sure the DOJ leaves you alone is a flash magnifier. Regarding the "feature" thing, honestly, I believe that the various agencies just looked at a lot of these weapons and picked out the characteristics that make them distinctly "military" in function and/or simply in appearance. And they were then hoping that if they reduce the allowable characteristics, all of these weapons would thus disappear from the market.Comment

Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.
