Range Report

I took my newly built rifle out for the second time today, and have some results to share. I brought along some Radway (92 headstamp) and the remains of the Black Hills blue box (55gr FMJ) that I used to break the rifle in. I didn't get to do much accuracy testing the first time out, so I took this opportunity to do so.

I was only able to fire 108 rounds of the Radway, and it cycled without any problems. In fact, it was hotter than the Black Hills that I had. It was also quite a bit dirtier and smelled fairly odd.

* I'm not exactly sure who makes these, but they are excellent quality. Comparing them to CMT parts, they appear to be the same.

First I tested the Black Hills at 50 yards:



Just a bit over 1/2".

Next, the Radway:



Close to 5/8, with 3 within 1/4".

After finishing up at 50 yards, I moved on to 100.

Black Hills, 10 (or 9...) rds:



~ 1 3/4, 1 1/4 without the flyer.

And the Radway, also 10 rds:



~1 3/8"

As a bonus, here are the results of an entire box of 50 of the Black Hills at 50 yards rapid fire (well, as rapid as you can fire at Chabot without getting yelled at, about 1 every 2 seconds on average) from my first trip with this rifle:



~1.5" (ignoring the ones that I obviously pulled.)

I'm pleased with the performance overall, and I hope to test it with some quality 75 grain match ammo in the near future

Hi I just finish my build with a fix magazine were is a range i can shoot my rifle around the east bay all the ranges that I know don't let you shoot 223's any help?

Chabot or Richmond Rod and Gun.

I've not heard of any Bay Area ranges turning OLL's away.

I don't know of any indoor ranges that allow .223, but Chabot, Los Altos, Sunnyvale, and Livermore (no steel cased, steel jacketed, or steel core ammunition) would all work.

Oh, yeah, forgot about indoor. Indoor never occurs to me when it comes to rifles, though. :P

Any OUTDOOR range should be cool. I can reccomend Chabot, I love it there.

Nice goin'! Glad you didn't cheap out on a scope; that Burris is a great value, good glass and holds its zero (at least for ordinary mortals).

Your barrel is very good, save your pennies and try some Fed Gold Medal Match... and get a good spotting scope so you can see the bulges in the same-hole groups

The Black Hills groups show you why all the competetive service teams contract with BH for their ammo!

You should try to make it out to Chabot on a Friday to shoot on the 200 yard line. I think SJGE has Black Hills 75 gr. blue box if you're trying to find it locally.

I've wanted to shoot at the 200 yard line for a while, but I'm not sure how to do so. Do you check in at the building by the 200 yard range? Can you check at the 100 yard side and move to the 200 later?
