For those who have experimented with different AK build methods...preference?

What's your preference for builds? What tools did you need for your method? What was your total cost in tools and how simple/tough was the build?

Romy AK -47 parts kit $99
    NDS-3 receiver $55
    Compliance parts $75
On one build I ground off the rivet heads on the parts kit but left them in the trunions so that they could be flush with the new receiver surface. No barrel removal. The rivet with a little trunion were TIG welded. $30 for 10 welds.
    Hand grinder wheel $1
Metric screws and nuts for trigger guard $1
    Paint $50

Building a firearm is not the area for experiment

Build it just like the factory did - with rivets. After all, riveted AK receivers have been around for quite some time. I do not expect any surprises. When it comes to firearms - i hate surprises. After all, the whole point of owning AK is bulletproof reliability. If you want a more accurate and somewhat less reliable rifle - get yourself an AR.

Where can we buy reliable 10 round mags? I am told some don't function well.

I just got a handfull of 5 rnd chinese, replaced the followers (with the TAPCO 10 rnd) then gave 'em a try. Some worked, some got thrown on the bench for later tinkering.

I've done screw, easy to assemble but pain in the butt to hog out the rivets and tap. As for tools - Dremel, drill bits, taps (have extra you'll prolly break at least one), also bottom taps are useful (or you can make one out of your broken taps).

I've done rivet, longer assembly (and alot more hitting things with a hammer) but anymore builds I do will be rivet. As for tools - hammers, lots of pennies, bolt cutter (to mod into a rivet crusher), riveting punch.

          Not much difference in cost.
