Moving to Cali, should I buy an AR now?

After a prolonged absence (and an upcoming deployment to Iraq), I am finally returning to my beloved California. Yes, many hate the laws as much as I, but I love her anyway.

I'm wondering though if buying an AR lower (stripped) would help me avoid some dumb taxes or would I have to pay fees to bring it with me? I'm currently a resident of Texas, so I'm in the right state to buy a gun.

Just so you know, I will be building the AR with a Prince50 kit for legality and so I can add plenty of evil features.

If you want a complete rifle, like a S&W M&P-15 or a Barrett M468, or other such off-list rifle, or AR pistol lower... buy it over there...

If you just want to buy a receiver and assemble it yourself, it doesn't really matter.

I am unaware of any taxes on the AR's sold here other than the normal state/local sales tax. You'll find that the real estate taxes here are like 1/3rd of what they are in Texas so you'll off set the extra percent or two in sales tax.

          from reading this...
"and an upcoming deployment to Iraq"
          ...I'm assuming your military, so...
buy a reciever or a whole gun, and leave it out of state. Apply for the military permit. ~$78 or so. Once you get the permit, bring it in the state as a registered weapon, with all the "evil features" and detachable 10 rounders you want. Just go to the local sheriff's office of where you'll be stationed to get the prints done. Buy as much as you can now, because once you put the serials on the form, you can't add any more later.(I think there's room for 6 or so on the form) Takes about a week and a half to get the whole thing done, and the DOJ is actually really helpful. They called me when they were typing mine up so I could put in for leave to go get my rifle.

If you buy in TX you will not have to DROS and wait 10 days. Also, you should figure out what other offlist non AR/AKs you might want so that you can get them into CA compliant status without having to arrange with an out of state FFL to remove a pistol grip or the like.

You can't have the .410 in pistol configuration, it's considered a short barrel shotgun in CA.
In a letter dated December 28th 2005 Deputy Attorney General Alison Merrilees stated:

"You should also be aware that we intend to add it soon to the DOJ Assault Weapons Identification Guide. Therefore, the Stag-15 will soon be classified as an assault weapon."

                To Mrs. Merrilees I ask:

                Whats your definition of soon?

Wow, that's something I haven't heard of. I AM active duty, so that means I can buy, say, a Stag15 lower, leave it in TX and register it when I arrive in CA? And that would let me have detachable ten rounders and evil features? What about pre-ban magazines of higher capacity? Please, details details!

Thanks for the great input guys. Wish I had the cash to stock up an arsenal now.

no on the magazines, have to stick to 10 rounders. You can have any model you want. I have an armalite m15, and that's smack dab on the middle of the list.

Beware! The .45/.410 barrels are illegal in California. They are considered short barrelled shotguns. It doesn't matter if the barrels are rifled or not.

IF you are not a California resident - and enlisting in/from California isn't going to work well for you you can apply for a MAWP. You need a set of PCS orders and a CA mailing address then the permit and fingerprint card (the military police can do them).

No magazines above ten rounds even with the MAWP.

Put another way if you are a California resident and were PCS'd to another state and are PCS ing back, you're SOL just the the rest of us California residents.
