    Shot a 1000 yards today

Today i went shooting at the private range behind my house with a couple calgunners we were shooting steel and paper at 100 to 250 yards, Wildcard found a clearing 1000+ yards away with a nice flat rock abought the size of a watermelon,it was cool with no wind. I was shooting a Sav 112 in 223 and managed to hit it a few times, Wildcard was on target and hitting it quite a few times with his PSS in 308 using Federal Match ammo. I too was able to smack it around with my PSS in 308 i was shooting different match loads i made.It seemed easey after awhile and felt like we could hit it all day
Wildcard volenteered to hike up to clearing and set up some steel targets the next time he comes up so i was thinking 15in and 10in steel plates.
Oh by the way don`t make any bar bets with Wildcard, the kid can shoot...

YOU may be able to shoot that rock all day with your comfortable shooting bench and economical hand loaded match ammo, but when you're shooting prone at $1 a shot.. both your shoulder and wallet starts to beg for mercy!

Thanks for the invite up to your shooting spot. It's always nice to shoot with others who could take down a target at 1000yds with a rifle and consistently hit steel out to 100yds with a .44 revolver and whatever other handgun we pick up. My lessoned learned was finally experiencing the effects of angle when shooting long distance. When shooting 168 grain Sierra Match HPBT Federal Match up a 35 degree incline, you have to adjust to shoot approx 80 inches HIGHER depending on the hardware you're using. Can't wait to make another trip up. We'll get that target set up!

If any of you are lucky enough to go shooting with Jon, take an SUV or a vehicle you don't care about getting sand/ dust/ dirt on and can take some bumps and rocks on the road! Don't be like me and take a lowered import with race tires.. you'll cry even when driving sloooooow.

Since you guys have access to that distance, you should practice hitting those distant targets on your FIRST shot. Also, put targets at varying ranges between 200 and 1000 and practice hitting those on your first shot as well, either ranging using mil-dots or just approximating. That is the real test. Glad to hear you guys were having fun out there and your equipment was performing with you.

Indeed... I was shocked when I saw your car up there, lol

Oh well, its a Honda product, it'll take a lot more than that to kill it!!! LOL

Hope to see you out again.

I agree. I could shoot anything in between 0 - 1000 yds on the 1st shot given fairly ideal conditions, but when factors such as distance, wind, angle, temperature, elevation, etc, change.. its all textbook for the first shot unless you've done it before and have taken the effort to learn from past experiences and making adjustments accordingly. It really comes down to doing it and practicing.. which I wouldn't mind doing more of. Anyone want to show me how to reload so I can afford to do so? So one day when I get a better feel for it all, I'll theoretically be able to hit more things on the first shot instead of just coming pretty darn close and then nailing it thereafter. Still tons of fun just to do it though I must admit!

You might be able to walk a .223 round in on a target at 1000, but the drop is so significant and velocity will be so decreased, that it won't be an effective shot. Unless you are using some of the 80+ grain rounds (which require throated barrel to fire), 1000 yards is too far for .223.

1000 yards is considered the upper limit even for 308 under field conditions.

P.S. Wildcard, I might join you guys someday and we can discuss reloading all day.
