    Varmint Shoot!!!

Well, my friend and I hope to go shoot vermin on my friend's uncle's property. We're each taking .22 LR bolt action. AFter doing some research, it looks like CCI stingers in .22 LR are the best bet for this kinda thing. I wanted to know if you guys have any suggestions for better rounds.

    Thanks!

I haven't actually been there yet, but seeing as its the foothills near fresno/clovis, I would guess mostly squirells, with the occasional rabbit/groundhog.

Stingers aren't my most favorite, I've found their accuracy to be spotty at times and I am less than impressed by their expansion.

My favorite? It's the Winchester Power Point, pretty mean hollow point on that sucker at a reasonable velocity. I have had a bit better results from that load in my Marlin 781.

          I'd upgrade to a 17HMR or a 17HM2.

+1 to upgrading to 17. I was out shooting ground rats and could see leaves falling out of the trees above me when the richochet.

.17 is always a good choice. As for .22 ammo my best results have been with CCI velociraptors or Aguila high velocity 30 grain ammo. Winchester power points also work well for a cheaper round.

Rimfire .22s are notoriously sensitive to ammo types, and when shooting varmints, accuracy is everything. If at all possible take samples of most common ammo to a range and shoot lots of groups, you'll find the rifle will prefer some types more than others, then buy as much of that type as possible, even the same lot number if possible. I have found that bulk Federal hollow points seem to always shoot well, and are available in 550 rd boxes. Good hunting.

I like the 5MM remington Magnum but it is not realistic since they dont make ammo for it anymore.

Since then I have fallen in love with the 17HMR the best choice for game up to coyote.
