    Thompson-Tommy style gun question.

So what are the options for this gun to make it california compliant? It doesnt exactly break open easily like an AR.

OVERVIEW: THOMPSON M1 OVERVIEW: THOMPSON M1 Our M1 Thompson model is a .45 caliber semi-automatic replica of the most famous American submachine gun of World War II. The Thompson M1 was used victoriously in battles throughout the world, ensuring its place for eternity as a legend among military firearms. We…

I have the 1927 A1 Tommy rifle and all that needs to be done is replace vertical forward grip, if it has one, with M1 style grip as shown in link and add a grip wrap...100% CA legal in this configuration as featureless.

You may want to consider the Cali compliance modification that Dan Block AKA 'Deerslayer' is offering over in the Semi-Auto Thompson section of the Machinegunboards:

So, here is what I have worked out for the Thompson market in California. This modification only works with the 1927 and 10 round drum to be California compliant. The new California law allows the magazine to be switched if the gun is disassembled (as in upper and lower on a Thompson moving apart...

I have one and I bought an extra wood grip from AO and made my own grip wrap mod.
You can pull pistol grip off and fire away.

I prefer the grip mod tho. No other mods needed in CA.

              Rhetorical.
Just wanted to slow the roll a bit.

Not as cool as a Tommy gun for sure, but have you considered a .45ACP AR-45 or Hi-Point carbine OP? Way more budget friendly.

Yeah honestly before you go down this route maybe find one you can fire. There are not many US firearms I would like to shoot less than a Thompson.

I pick mine up from dross next week which is the M1A1 WW2 style, no forward grip and no compensator. You can go that route and just use a fin grip to make it featureless.

                      LOL seriously.

My dad has a real ww2 select fire 1943 M1A1 thompson...The thing is so uncomfy, heavy, the buttstock LOP is long and awkward. If it wasn't a legit original ww2 rifle, I would absolutely hate it.

I cant imagine a Ca legal semi auto version with a goofy looking 16" barrel being worth owning at all..

I handled one a few months back- the LOP, as described by xxINKxx, is stupid long. After shouldering just about every other semiauto long gun in the store, the butt of the Thompson's stock ended up in my armpit as I brought it up to mount. It's also ridiculously front-heavy.

Fun, though. Plus it draws a crowd.

These guns are bulky, inaccurate, could throw lots of led everywhere on full automatic, and just fun to shoot if you know how to handle one properly. the problem to me is how the state can force you to change the configuration from factory stock if you owned the rifle before the law change and it was legal to the original owner at the time of purchase? They cannot do that on cars or anything else and this is where the "grandfathered in" issue comes into play. I thought that issue was basically settled on the forced smog issue under Edmund brown when the courts said the state could not legally force anyone to add or modify a car beyond manufacture specs when that car had been approved for sale in the state? Now changes can be imposed on new products sold after a law change and the manufacturer has the option not to sell in california any longer.

OP - If you go featureless...

Hey OP - frustrated with the featureless configuration of my Tommy, I just recently sent it off to Deerslayer/ Dan Block to do the California Modification as well as some other things - a general gussying up if you will. I have a nice Thompson grip wrap custom made by CG member Munkeeboi/FinGrips I can sell to you for my cost $30.

Personally I think the Thompson is too heavy - specifically too front heavy as CoopsDad pointed out - to not have your thumb wrapped around the grip. Bench shooting is no prob, however it is awkward and unwieldy to run a featureless Thompson shooting off-hand.

Though it’s one of the most universally recognized and iconic firearm in history, it is not a practical gun - def more of a novelty and occasional range toy. It certainly draws a crowd whenever I bust it out at the range - kinda like having a leggy blonde in a red dress with you to the range. Lots of guys hovering around leering lustfully...
