    AR-15 RIBZO question

I have a detachable carry handle with a rear sight marked 6/3.

I followed the directions on AR15.com (link) on how to do a Revised Improved Battle Sight Zero using an 8/3 rear sight. So I followed the directions and moved the rear wheel -4 clicks. Everything looks good, I have my 100 yard zero available at -3 clicks with -1 click of 'buffer' room. However....

In reading further, I realize that I should have been doubling the clicks when setting the RIBZO and I should have done -8 clicks. So I adjust the rear sight and -4 more clicks to set it correctly.

Now I am finding that my rear sight is bottomed out and can only add clicks not subtract them.

I do realize that the rear sight needs to be adjusted AND THEN the front sight needs to be adjusted to the RIBZO setting? Is this correct? Should I add 4 clicks to revert to how I originally had it after the 8/3 attempt, where I had an extra click of buffer room, then adjust the front sight? I am scratching my head because with everything doubled I have no room to go down clicks now.

Now after fiddling with this I am wondering what should the standard factory setting for a 6/8 rear sight should be set at to start.

i'm in the same boat in a way i have a Command arms Carry handle sight and have been wondering if directly following the directions of the RIBZ/IBZ is the correct way to go since the rear sight bottoms out and has a minimum setting of the Z mark with the 4 setting 4 clicks clockwise.

If I remember correctly a 6/3 marked carry handle is for Carbines and the 8/3 is for rifles. 6/3 carry handles are 1.5 min and 8/3 are 1 min per click.

From what i recall from the different sources i read about this subject from the 6/3 flat top carry handle and 8/3 A2 sight differences is due to the fact the carry handle sits at a slightly different height then the A2 sights

that thread from arfcom also states that one click on the A2 == 2 on the carry handle.

heres a quote from the original IBZ:

        1. Sight should be at 8/3 -2 clicks, that is, all the way down, not up a click. Please note removable handle sights are marked 6/3 (rather than 8/3); also some are in ‘half-clicks’ as well. There should be 3 clicks between 3 and 4 on the knob. If there are 6 clicks then the sight needs to be set at –4 clicks (instead of –2).

right, and now my rear sight is bottomed out.. so I should adjust my front sight instead?

Zeroing an AR shouldn't be this complicated. If you want, you can set the elevation knob's 8/3 marking or whatever you have 10 or so clicks up from bottom to remove dead clicks and give some leeway to go down. This is your mechanical elevation zero. After that, adjust for your livefire zero using your front sight post only. I'm assuming you have a standard issue front sight post (and not a tapered National Match post), so you can use quarter turns on the post for 1-1/4 MOA per quarter turn.

Another way is to set the wheel to the 6/3 and zero the carbine at 50 meteres. And then leave it, as this will also be your 200m zero. Which is the operational max of an AR carbine anyway....

And if you want to get even more "ironed up" switch out the A2 rear sight for an A1 as the peeps are more forgiving for less than perfect lighting.

Best iron sights for any AR were the A1 sights imho, unless you are shooting a match, then you shouldn't be using a carbine anyway!
