Can someone tell me what the difference is in the actions, short vs. long??

.308 and shorter rounds are usually short action, 30.06 and longer rounds are long actions. there are some long actions in the .308

there may be more to it but this is the basic.

The action and magazine are longer...hence, short action and long action. The long actions accomodate magnum "long action" and magnum cartridges. This is for ALL Remington 700s, not just the Police model.

Do you want an actual measurement of the difference in length?

No, I was just curious about the difference. I am thinking about getting a 7oo Police model, and didn't know if they came in both long and short, if I had the option to choose, or with a .308, if it came only one way.

I am looking to get my first precision rifle and was told this was the model to start with. Any ideas?

I'd say go with that idea; but as far as I know the .308 is 'only' a short action.

The short action is theortically stiffer than the long and requires less movement to cycle. More importantly, ALL the cool tactical stuff is available for the short action and much less for the long.

You could just get a 700 Varmint 308. It's the same barreled action, just different finish and stock. Might be cheaper if you're not deadset on having the police special.

How much money are you willing to spend? You should take a look at a Remington 5R special model. It is price around $850 and shoots better than my 700PSS. .308 is the way to go.
700P is an excellent rifle. Also check out the FN SPR. It's one of the most accurate non-custom rifles on the market. It starts around $1200.

Okay... Where to begin.

Since you want to go with a .308, a SA (Short Action) is what you will get. The .308 is THE most popular caliber choice for precision bolt-action rifles.

The Remington 700P is also very popular. It is a great rifle to build on, or just shoot like it is.

I'd STRONGLY recommend getting some decent glass for it along with quality mounts. Both will run you a fairly large piece of $$$ but are well worth it.

For glass I'd recommend a either a Leupold (Vari-X III or Mark4) if you really need to spent all that $$$. If not, then a Tasco Super Sniper is the way to go (http://www.gunblast.com/SWFA_Super_Sniper.htm).

For mounts I'd go with someone like Badger Ordnance. Throw in a good sling (Tactical Intervention Specialists) and a Bipod (Harris) and you're ready.

After that, all you'll need is PLENTY of ammo! Practice, practice, practice!

5r rifled barrels have 5 rifling grooves and the lands have a radiused edge as opposed to a sharp, shelf-type land on standard rifling. Some claim that 5r barrels are more accurate b/c the bullet jacket conforms to the rifling better in the radiused, 54 type rifling.

700 R5 Mil Spec

Ordered the 700 R5 Mil Spec .308 last week from Franks Guns back east (315-736-0062), now waiting 10 days. Also, ordered the Leupold "6.5-20x 40mm (1in. tube) EMR Target" from Franks Guns, should get it any day, w/ Dual Dove Tail mounts and rings. Hopefully everything stays under 10 lbs 2 oz for high power silhuoette. Harris bi-pod, tac sling, boom.

The 700 LTR is also a good rifle to get. They go for about $750-850.
