Federal law says to buy a long gun out of your home state, you have to follow the laws of the buyer's state and the laws where the seller lives.
For California residents, California requires that such a sale goes through a California-licensed FFL. If you were/are not a resident of that other state, in a sense that the BATF will accept, you may have Made A Mistake in buying out of state.
