Are AK kits still legal in CA?

It`s kind of hard to keep up with the development in CA legislature, I would appreciate it if someone could chime in. A few years back it was perfectly OK to build an AK if it was compliant with CA requirements.

The reason I`m asking is, I came across this article:

Now, that person was a convicted felon, so he was prohibited from owning firearms and ammunition anyway, but the second charge was for "attempted possession and manufacture of the banned firearm", despite the fact that it was "a box of parts for the semiautomatic rifle and a receiver he had prepared for assembly, then pulled up an instructional website on his computer screen".

Well he might have had the original military select fire fcg, so my question is whether building CA compliant AK`s is still legal.

This is just a semi-informed guess (so take it for that value), but if it complies with the AW restrictions, I would say so. Me? I only own bolt action rimfires

The problem is, the legislation is being "updated" or "amended" all the time, for example legally owned pre-ban standard capacity magazines that were banned, as well as the bullet button etc.

the "convicted felon" is most likely prohibited from owning any firearms or related products.
that kit would also fall under constructive procession of a AW.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.

For average, non prohibited folks like you and I, we can buy, possess, and assemble AKs from parts kits just the same. We still need to adhere to our state laws for semi auto long guns, however.

I got that part. So is it still legal for a law abiding citizen to build a CA compliant AK from a kit or not?

Having the parts for a non-compliant rifle and only those parts might get interesting in some circumstances.

I'd add and/or remove parts from the pile asap just for peace of mind.

Yes kits are legal in California, your final build must be 922r complaint. Most AKs only have one evil feature, which is the pistol grip. There's also a fixed mag option. Unless you completed your build before 2017 registration isn't an option.
