    AR9 Charge Handle Questions

I've got a PSA AR9 and had an issue with it I would like some help on!

The very front of the charge handle broke off after about 200 rounds. I know you're not supposed to jerk charge handles too hard normally, but I'm under the impression that the 9mm buffer system is heavier, so we're forced to exert more force to charge it.

    1) Will any standard charge handle work with the 9mm BCG?
    2) Are there any that might be stronger than the cheap-feeling one the PSA came with? (Preferably while being under $60)
    3) How dangerous would it be to the upper to upgrade to a steel handle?

Yes...most any AR15 charging handle will work.

Yes...there are many charging handles available.

I would love to see you find a steel charging handle.

Go to the websites of our many vendors, or use google.
Decide on a style of charging handle you like...and buy that.

There is a steel charging handle sold on brownells. It's more than 60. One of the best charging handles imo is the raptor ambi can be had for around 60 on sale nowdays. Make sure your upper is assembled right.

They do make steel charging handles, like this one

But I do think a steel charging handle is way over kill and not needed.

I wouldn't go steel for a regular AR15, but the force needed to charge the AR9 seems a lot more than AR15s I've used in the past, and I wonder if it's putting more stress on the handle than they would experience in a normal AR. But I'm also worried the steel will chew up the aluminum upper.

They seem to be the same on my 9 and 223.
Same resistance, which doesn’t require too much strength. Maybe you need a slightly softer spring?

That's a good thought. It was a 9mm kit. I'll try the same buffer with a softer spring and see if I get any failures to feed.
