Try running a 16" when getting out of a vehicle or working inside a cramped hallway, and then the 14.5 suddenly makes sense.

Having gone the fixed front sight route, I sometimes wish I had gone the flip-up sight route instead, since I like to run magnified optics. The fixed front sight appears as a super-blurry "ghost" in the lower part of the field of view and often reflects white light up into the scope. A folding sight would be too short to cause these problems.
    A 14.5 with a 1.5 pinned brake is still 16 inches...how is it better than a 16" standard barrel?

Not just yes but hell yes. If you can find a carbine VIS for anywhere near that price I'd sure like to know about it. It's damn near impossible right now to even find one. Period.

LOL--Naw, the standard A2 birdcage is longer than .3" inches! Measure from the crown of the barrel to the tip of the flashhider--it comes out to 1.25" that is added to the barrel length = 17.25" overall.

            But with a nice 14.5 and a 1.6" extended A2 birdcage, we're talking about a 16.1" barrel length.

1.25" makes a surprising difference when in tight quarters. I went the 16" barrel route and found myself wishing I had gone the 14.5 route instead after taking that last tac carbine course. I should've run the course with my FS2000--it has a nearly 18" barrel but is so short its overall length has to be increased by around 2" to bring it over the 30" OAL requirement. That gun is sweet to maneuver with.

One dude there had a shorty 7.5" barrel and a Noveske KX3 flashhider = very cool!
