    Iron Sites?

I have a Browning 375 H&H with a 26" barrel. It has a Trijicon 2-10 scope mounted to it, but for the life of me (and two different gunsmiths), the damn thing won't stay zeroed.

I mean, the thing isn't just a little off, it's wildly inaccurate because the mounts to the rings takes so much tightening that it actually chews into the ring bases to the point where I've had to replace them twice. And it's not a matter of using lock-tight either. That's been done and done again. I tend to think it's the stock; the recoil is just too much for it.

However, I don't want to put the time and money into getting something like a McMillan to put on the thing. The cost would run somewhere in the $500-$600 range and this particular rifle just doesn't get enough use to justify that kind of money.

Anyway, with a 26" barrel I think a good set of open sights could make this rifle reliable and useable again. Any suggestions as to what kind I should use?

Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If you have to tighten the mount, rings that much that the first sign that there is something wrong what kind are they?

Another thing to consider is the nut behind the trigger

The scope base could also be the problem. It could be loose or not sitting flat on the rifle.
If you could attach a couple of pics would help.

More info needed. Shoots a tight group? But not to point of aim? Or does it pattern like a shotgun?

Thanks (to everyone) for the response.

First, yes, the rifle shoots very well before the scope is shaken loose from its mounts.

For the mounts, I've used Browning parts and I've run through two sets of Vortex rings.

Again, two different gunsmiths haven't been able to fix the problem, and that's why I tend to think the stock isn't up to the task.

Something I somehow forgot to mention: the trigger guard + magazine gets shaken loose after awhile, which results in feeding problems. I've used loctite here, which worked for a while, but eventually I had to buy new screws and re-do it. So that makes me think the stock is the issue.

I don't want to get rid of it because:

            1. It's a left-handed rifle. To find this caliber in left hand without paying a premium is extremely difficult. CZ makes them and they're readily available, but as of now is charging roughly an $800 premium for left handed models. For the same price, I could get a Sako--which I ordered 2 separate times, but never came in, which resulted in waiting 6 months for nothing. It took me the better part of 10 months to finally be able get what I have now.

            2. I don't want to foist this problem off on some unsuspecting person. I would have to warn them that it has issues, which would certainly scare off most buyers. Also, that's what happened to me with this one, and I'm not going to do that to someone else.

If I had it to do all over again, I would've just bit the bullet and bought a CZ. But I have what I have so I need to make the best use of it.

            Thanks.

It sounds like you need to try a different scope. Maybe the scope tube is a on the smaller side of the the manufacturer's tolerances? I'd try a NF scope and either NF or Badger Max 50 rings. Have your rings been lapped? If so, maybe whoever lapped them took off too much metal???

If you are set on keeping the rifle I would look at some Talley direct mounts and see where that gets you. Simpler and mount right to the receiver so you don't have mounts and clamps if I am understanding your original post.

Otherwise I would say see what Browning can do with it and then sell it. Browning makes good guns, but I have never heard good things about their 375 H&H model.

Take the scope off and shake it. See If the glass came loose inside from the recoil. It's the only way to tell.

Sounds like you need another gunsmith.

PM Kendog4570. All the work he has done for me has been great, and nothing comes loose.

Yeah we noticed it. He already can’t get his gun squared away, no reason to critique his writing ability too.
