A simple rule of thumb is that if it says "NFA Rules Apply ".......
you can't have it . Free states only. It can just be sold in 'old' America .

It is perfectly legal in Ca until you mate it with a lower. It could be really really nice Ca paperweight.

Federal consructive posession, unless you got a pistol lower, or a stripped lower to become a pistol (not shure if ca is cool on that though)

Bplvr is probably referring to the issue of and risk surrounding constructive possesion.

Yeah only beacause its NFA= constructive possesion , does not mean its illegal in CA, if you do not own a AR at all, you can go ahead and buy it and it will be a fine paper weight. If you have an AR rifle but no AR pistol then yes there is constructive possesion, if you have an AR rifle and AR pistol lower then your fine with buying that upper. even in CA.

I probably should have assumed that the OP had a penchant for $800 AR paperweights, a SBR or had a pistol lower.

Sure it is, as a pistol upper, or on a registered Short Barreled Rifle, or on a registered MG.

If all you have is a semi-auto AR type rifle receiver, it's a real bad idea to have one in possession.
The way some gunshop clerks spout off, you'd think that they invented gunpowder and the repeating rifle, and sat on the Supreme Court as well.
