    AR-10 v. M1A

I've had M1As for a long time, and am wondering what I'm missing out with by not owning an AR-10. How's the accuracy compared to the M1A? For those with experience with both, which do you prefer and why?

The AR10 has an edge on the M1a when it comes to accuracy but either one can outshoot my abilities.

I never shot an AR-10, but shot a Stoner SR-25, 5 shots 1/2" group at 100 yards. My M-1A never had a scope on it, but I shot about 1" group with iron sights at 100 yards. But then, my M-1A was built by Marine armorer for match. When properly tuned, both rifles will shoot very well, however, AR-10 does not have to deal with glass bedding issue, generally speaking.

AR10 vs Standard m1a AR10 groups much better out of the box than my m1a standard, My AR10 out the box gets ≤ 1moa and my Standard was ≥ 2moa

My m25 whitefeather gets ≤ .5moa but it set me back around 6k

m14/1a's need a little tuning/money to run right but they can and will. I've always loved m14's since I was a kid so I don't mind the price on em.

But out the box, AR10's are shooters.

          M1As legal with detachable magazines

          AR-10s must be neutered.

Neither matches (even the Whitefeather) the accuracy potential of a good bolt gun.

            Umm.. that is not true.

AR-10s can have a detachable mag with a featureless build just like the M1A

I have two AR-10s and a SCOM 16. I personally like shooting the SCOM over the AR-10s.

If you build a match grade AR-10 with a tight tolerances sub MOA is achievable. Sub MOA is the all we can really ask for in a bolt or semi tactical builds.

i think he meant neutered = featureless

Featureless IS neutered! That's right. IMHO it's NOT an AR-10 anymore with a monster man or U-15 on it. Why cling to the operating system if it has been rendered unidentifiable?

Also, the neutered AR-10 is "compliant" not "legal" in as far as any ruling I have seen. Last time I checked AG Brown left it up to the 58 individual city district attorneys whether they wanted to prosecute BB and MMG, etc, as "assault rifles."

Of course I have them, but I do not kid myself into using the word "legal."

Compliant is what they are, and there have been enough posts here to show we may have to fight to prove that.

Anyway, getting back to the OP, the point is, as the M1-A comes out of the box at Turners or where ever, it is FULLY LEGAL to use with detachable mags in that configuration. As long as you don't put one of those ridiculous pistol grip stocks on it, you are ahead of the game.

To me they fill different roles. My AR10T is my semi precision rifle and the M1A is used for a fun desert/plinking battle type rifle.

Do you plan on putting a scope on it? If so the AR10 wins hands down. Every scope mount for the M1A does horrible things to the ergos of the rifle, that is unless you like a jaw weld vs. a cheek weld. Of course you can pick up a new stock or some bolt on cheek piece but it is not needed on the AR10. I love my M1A and have tired optics and different stocks on it but keep going back the to the standard stock and iron sights.

With a BB the AR10 isn't so bad and who can afford to spit out 20 rds of .308 at a time all day long anyway with ammo prices being what they are.
My friends standard barreled AR10 is more accurate than my M1A shooting the same ammo.
