Please be careful about leaving guns behind.

If the folks who hold the guns for you have access to them, and you then move to CA, that looks like a transfer.

      That is
      - you had them
      - now someone else has them
      - and you no longer do

If ever you want them back, and you are not then a resident of the state where the guns are held, you'll likely have to run those guns through an FFL before you can take possession of them again.

Some of us think that storing them locked and inaccessible to the holder prevents a change in possession.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

Thanks for the tip. I’ve got a year to sort it out, which is just enough time to think about what to do for 11.5 months and freak out over it for 2 weeks. Naturally after all of my research i never looked up how to convert a scar to be compliant. It doesn’t look half difficult, just stupid, but its legal. So perhaps that’s what i’ll be doing.

If you don't want to sell you can always just remove the uppers from the lowers and never use them until you can transfer somewhere else.

Was going to say stay away from CA but if it's for thr military you probably don't have a choice. Enjoy your stay.

If he stays in VA to avoid CA's nonsensical gun laws does that make him ...... a daft dodger?

Thank you, thank you - don't forget to tip the hat check girl on the way out.
