    building a new upper

So, since my ex-friend totaled my upper receiver I need to build a new one. for those of you that have not heard the story; A friend was thinking about getting an ACOG so he asked if he could use mine. Not wanting to say no but also not wanting to just hand my beloved ACOG over and later deal with re zeroing the gun, I arranged to meet him at the range so that he could put a few rounds through my rifle and see how he liked the optic. This was not our first time shooting and he had demonstrated competence with weapons previously to this range trip. Also...we both shoot 300 BLK. He brought his own ammo that he insisted on using, which was a hodge podge of mixed case heads in a Tupperware container. Anyway, I'm shooting my rifle and I'm having FTEs on both brass and steel and the gun had never had trouble with anything I was feeding it that day. I'd had the same issue my last range trip and I concluded that the bolt, which was a PSA nickel boron, needed an extractor replacement. The rifle was just over its 4,000 round mark and it made since that a less expensive BCG might need a new extractor by then. So instead of just buying an extractor I decided to upgrade to a Fail Zero BCG. I put it in and head spaced with my go/nogo gauges. My friend decides that he needs to try the gun now. He inserts a mag that he loaded while I was buying the BCG and he begins to fire. On round 22 the rifle has a catastrophic failure. Despite my thinking its a defective BCG, cause that is all that changed, the gunsmith on sight finds a .300 BLK shell busted open in the chamber. Now in true 'friendly' fashion my friend is quick to blame me saying that I should have watched him load his mag...He refused to replace even any of the parts and we are no longer friends.

The lower was fine, I may be able to bend the mag back into place and a new floor plate will have it back in action. The upper though...the only things truly salvageable are the hand guards, front sight, rear sight, the optic, muzzle break, gas tube, and the charging handle.

Anyway, I plead my case to Fail Zero, even though I knew that this did not fall within their warranty, and I was truthful about the situation. They agreed to replace it! Awesome company!!!! So I have that sitting at the house and my new RRA upper came in yesterday!!! Just collecting funds for an Odin works Barrel now and I'll have me a functioning rifle again! I am 1/3 the way there!

Damn that sucks. What a dick friend. I've experienced similar but with car stuff

Good luck in the new build, there's always deals in the fs forum and the ar15.com ee (for sale) sections. Get time to buy parts these days.

    Fail zero, good people!

        Good riddance.
You don't need "friends" like that.
You probably got rid of him pretty cheaply in the grand scheme of things.
Imagine if you had loaned him your car and he totaled it...

I thought the same thing. But I guess the friend meant "you would have had the chance then to veto the use of my crappy selection of rounds", or some such stupid logic.

I'm confused too. Is OP trying to say that the upper was chambered in 5.56 and his friend loaded 300 blk? Cuz you know, they both shoot 300 blk.

I am also confused... OP said they both run 300 blk......
"It is currently CA legal to modify a double-action revolver into a single-action revolver and modify a single-action revolver into a double-action revolver.

CA DOJ BOF stance on modifying handguns only applies to dimensionally compliant bolt-action single-shot pistols and dimensionally compliant break-open single-shot pistols.
^It does not apply to revolvers, manually operated repeating pistols, and semi-auto pistols." ~~ Quiet

OP's "friend" mixed a 300 blackout cartridge in the mag full of 223/5.56 ammo and then fired the 300 blackout cartridge through the 223/5.56 rifle.

Bad things happen when you try to fit a 30 caliber bullet through a 22 caliber bore.
