I keep hearing differing stories on what an AR-15 or even a handguns serial number tells someone? When it is ran,what info comes back?

The serial number alone does nothing unless the gun is registered and in the system. Forensically it can tell you to whom it was sold and the chain of ownership.

That's what I thought but I had heard that with long guns it doesn't tell you any info just if it's a long gun or handgun. Thanks for your reply, I'm having trouble finding any information online
