I am in the process of restaining the stock and handguard BUT I cant get the handguard off the gas tube...whats the trick??

You have to rotate it off.

Put the metal end in a vise and use a strong grip or a strap wrench to rotate it 180 degrees. Then pull it off.

I did the same thing.

Yeah just use a bit of oil than put the metal part in the vise (making sure also that you cover exposed tube with something soft so not to scratch the hell out of it) and turn. It will come off with no problem. Also remember...don't lose that little retainer inside or else when you put the handguard back on it will be loose.
