For .308 AR's we all kinda call them AR-10's but that is not really true.
DPMS AR style 308 is the closest thing to "Mil-spec". Not that the military uses it as a standard, but it is the most widely adopted pattern out there. There is alot of aftermarket support for it. Magpul makes p-mags for it. Etc.
These guys have a alot of selection and are always doing AR10 stuff. -
There are really just really 3 patterns that I can think of. Ar10 armalite, dpms lr308 gen 1 and lr308 gen2.
Lr308 gen1 being the most common but many flavors in between. Most parts don't mix and match with different manufacturers.
Armalite ar10 that is the most standardized but aftermarket parts availability is poor.
Lr308 gen 2 is not very common here yet.

DPMS/Stoner/Original AR-10 is the most common version.Magpul made version. They also made some with FAL,G-3 mag,M-14/M-1A mag (Armalite)AR-10A.The best seems to be Magpul.Factory metal DPMS don't work in some rifles for some reason.I have several .308 AR's.Comment

Also, there is DPMS "low" and DPMS "high" that will affect what handguard fits....
I have 2 DPMS "low" handguards that are useless to meOriginally posted by johnthomas...The hardest part getting rid of crap is getting started.Comment

Don't forget Mega MATEN as another large caliber pattern.Comment

Pick the handguard you want, then buy a corresponding matched receiver pair because there's no milspec (apart from the M110 which is Knights, and new CSASS which is HK) and differences between various companies' reverse engineered parts mean they don't fit like you want a $1000-$2000+ gun to.
That said, you may want a proprietary "small frame" AR battle rifle (with AR15 bolt carrier diameter and dimensions aft of the magazine well) which can save a pound of weight and eliminates the extra 5/8" of pull noting that some vendors (DPMS G2) don't sell uppers separately.Last edited by Drew Eckhardt; 10-03-2017, 10:37 PM.Comment
