    Straight Pull Single Shot

How about this mod to avoid registration in Kalifornia? Just like a Bolt Action single shot. AW laws doesn't apply. You can get rid of BB.

If you want a bolt gun, why not buy a bolt gun?

Lots of variations on this have been out for a while and discussed here almost weekly.

FYI, it's not a single shot. The gun still has a magazine full of cartridges.

Having both, for me it was the fact that I can assemble and customize it myself vs having someone do it. For the die hards on each platform it will never make sense but for a lot pf people its just for the love of the build. I went a little further than just assembling and blocking a gas port on mine and honestly during the process I was thinking I would hate shooting it. I couldn't have been more wrong. I love shooting it and will likely assemble another one in .308 for the heck of it.

Why an AR though? Of all gun platforms the AR seems like a really annoying one to do bolt action. Look at the video, he's just keeping his hand up on the charging handle because he knows it'll be a PITA to use it like, well, an actual bolt action rifle.

I didn't watch the video so I cant say, mine is based off a side charging upper and BCG. It is honestly very easy to shoot and not cumbersome at all. I tig welded and polished the barrel so there is no gas system to speak of and I left the buffer and spring so all I have to do is pull straight back and let go.

Ok I went back and watched it his is slightly different than mine but the same principle. I never shoot that fast but I have tried it and its not bad.

if this is what OP is going for. seems ok.

looks like side chargers are the way to go for single shot AR15's

In England they have an AR that has a gas block and tube that fires and ejects the round. Only one round at a time can be fired. The safety lever is then flipped to re-cock the rifle. It is a commercially produced rifle and I can see the manufacturer importing these rifles. If they can meet the stupid English requirements they can definitely meet the stupid California requirements.

AR's do not have sufficient primary extraction for manual operation.
The AR relies on the energy stored in the gas operated bolt carrier to pip the cartridge free of the chamber.
Everyone who builds manually operated AR's figures this out the hard way.

Proper bolt actions have a cam that pops the cartridge free of the chamber as part of the bolt's unlocking stroke.

I initially built my .264LBC as a straight pull bolt action with a side charging upper. Filled the gas port and gas block with JB Weld. Shot amazing. Cycling sucked. Randall is correct. First round ran fine had to beat the ***** out if the charging handle to cycle. I lasted 10 rounds. Its now featureless and amazing.

I am glad you brought this up, I did wonder if that could be an issue for me. So far it hasn't but should it arise I wont be surprised now.

Why not lock in a one round magazine then (sled?) ? Feed from the open bolt, let the gun fire and eject the round and lock back, then fee in the next.

Wait, isn't the Ruger Precision Rifle a bolt action "AR?"
Sure it's not straight pull, but the bolt is in the right place.

So basically, plug the gasblock and you have a "bolt action" gun.

It's generally shaped like an AR, but it's most certainly NOT an AR on the inside.
The bolt has 3 lugs and a proper camming surface for primary extraction.
The receiver has the mating lug abutments and the barrel threads into the receiver, just like most other traditional bolt action rifles.
It uses a locknut to set the headspace like a salvage.
