Does a $200 muzzle brake really work better than a $20 one?

Agreed! I've tried several for 5.56 and the handling is almost the same. I'm not factoring noise though.

I find it harder though to find bargain .308 muzzle brakes....

since ARs don't have a lot of recoil in the first place maybe a lot of MBs are less about canceling recoil and more about shooter comfort.

I don't think I'd want any flash into the sight picture, and don't need any blast coming back at my ears.

One of the best if not the best performing brake/compensator combos out there is under a hundred bucks. Much cheaper than many less effective brakes. http://www.larue.com/sjc-titan-compensator-223

          No.
Performance is generally a function of diameter and surface area within the ports.
The bigger it is in diameter, the more surface area you can get in the ports.

I like the low concussion brake or the sound forward brake combo.

I've tried a couple different styles. I had a 100 dollar fancy pointy brake that didn't do anything for me but look cool. I have a 16 dollar brake on my rifle now. Neither one actually gave a noticeable difference in accuracy for my shooting skills. But I can say the 100 dollar brake was a whole lot louder to anyone sitting next to me. Not sure why that was, but I ended up keeping the cheap eBay one simply because I like the way it looks. I have a thread protector on my featureless rifle.

I'm going to throw a monkey wrench into this discussion ,try a Troy linear comp.or my favorite a ARP JAL linear comp. Directing the blast down range and deviding it up between 5 or 6 holes will make shooting a much more pleasant experience . Anyone who doesn't agree hasn't done a side by side comparison .

The single most important thing to consider when buying a muzzle brake is how cool is it, which will determine how cool you look on the range.

All my gear has to be really cool otherwise I won't buy it

I also use linear brakes but they don't do much for recoil as the blast is directed forward. They are easier on the ears.

and this is why the best muzzle device ever to exist never gets tested, people cant afford them or find em to buy .

People spend money on all sorts of reasons beyond function.

If they didn't we'd all be driving the same car

The world is full of platitudes. What there is not much of, are absolutes.

Not all expensive things are good, and not all low cost items are cheap.

Look, observe, research, assess and make a decision. Just looking at price is the lazy way out.
