    BCG coatings?

    Hey all,

Just curious what kind of coating you prefer on your BCGs and why? Looks? Performance? Reliability? Ease of cleaning?

Does anyone have any experience with MicroSlick spray on, or the Mad Custom Coatings' version Mad Black https://madcustomcoating.com/mad-black/ ?

Parkerizing holds oil better than any other finish.
The most important property you need in a finish on the bolt carrier is its ability to hold oil.

Thanks, I will call them tomorrow.

I know spray on depends on how good of a job the coater does. So finding a quality place makes all the difference or it will just flake off.

I like nitride. It's not a coating, it hardens the metal. It's slick and cleans easily. Parked surfaces are soft and wear off quickly. Then you are down to bare steel.

It's also important who does the prep work. With bad prep work you will end up with bad coating.

I have never had a coated bcg go south on me. I have Ionbond bcgs , phosphated bcgs and NiB coated bcgs......I like them all equally.

I like nib. I'm lazy and it makes cleanup a breeze. That said, I have phosphate too. The phosphae will wear off where it makes contact eventually so holding oil in that spot really makes little difference where it is needed. Nib is slick to the touch and so far hasn't worn off. If you do get a nib, be sure to get a high quality one. The cheap ones tend to flake off where the gas rings are. If I were to go the budget route, I would simply get a psa premium phosphate rather an aim or psa nib. Melonite is a really nice treatment. I haven't had the chance to play with one yet but it seems promising.

I like the BCG's that come in my uppers but when I do have to buy a BCG, it's always a Colt.

No reason to buy into specially coated BCG's, etc. If a quality BCG can run tens of thousands of rounds in a select-fire rifle, in a harsh environment, with cleaning limited to punching your bore and wiping down your BCG, why pay for more to have some special treatment done to it?

                            Randall has it right.

I've played with coated bolts when they were cheap- in my experience nickel boron is so slick ALL the oil will run off it overnight. I use grease on those. They DO need lube to function reliably.

A broken in parkerized bolt with good lube feels just as slick in normal use.

A broken in parkerized bolt has lost all that oil containing ability. Bare steel isn't the best surface to slide. Nitride does not add any thickness to the bolt lugs, zero headspace issues. It also does not wear off easily.
