No, .22LR conversion kits do not utilize the rifle's buffer spring. The conversion has its own recoil spring and simply replaces the bolt carrier group in the rifle.

Nice that no harm was done. I'll echo the sentiment that it's good it didn't happen with a .223 round, but in all reality, the chance of this occurring is MUCH MUCH greater with the conversion kit.

This is pretty common with .22 kits, including some dedicated .22 uppers. The most common damage is blowing out the magazine, which can be pretty non-trivial with some kits.

It's a design thing. The AR, and most guns, have features that prevent the firing pin from hitting the primer if the bolt's not fully locked, though the extent of this depends on the individual design.

This is harder to do effectively with conversion kits and dedicated uppers for the AR platform, apparently. I've never had an OOB firing on any of my .22 rifles or pistols.

Just glad to hear that everyone is okay. I have a dedicated .22 upper, but I've been fortunate not to have that happen to me. Knock on wood.

I had the same thing happen yesterday with my Ceiner kit.It blew out the lower rear portion of the case ans blew the mag out if the rifle. I'll post a pic of the case later.

Someone could make a mint designing a .22LR conversion kit that actually locks the firing pin until the bolt is fully closed AND allows the AR forward assist to help close the bolt fully. There are a lot of improvements that could be made...

Both of my ciener kits do the same thing. The bolt rubs on the mags and doesn't always go into battery, but with my kit the firing pin won't set off the round unless the bolt is fully forward...I do get that frustrating FTF from it, which sounds a lot better than firing out of battery.

I really wish someone would make a better conversion kit, the ciener is not a reliable unit, but it beats burning up $100.00 a week on .223
