Let me guess... you close one eye when shooting while trying to look though the optic?

I'm with the other who said far forward as possible without moving it onto the hand guard.

Really, it depends on the size of the RD. When I had a Comp M4, just before the handguard. With an Aimpoint Micro, just above the ejection port. With a RMR, a few notches in front of the rear BUIS.

You don't have to run it all the way forward to shoot with both eyes open... His position is close to where mine always end up (about even with ejection port)...

There's no right or wrong... For me, that location is most intuitive to quickly aquire... I always try far forward, back and more center - and on every gun (even shotguns) center/close to ejection port is always most intuitive.

It's cool, you ain't got to lie to kick it.

Lots of people do that and it's fine, you get more FOV though the optic. Easy to understand why someone would but if ur shooting both eyes open the FOV isn't a concern.

Further away you place it the easier it is to get the optic to melt away.

Close you position it the easier it is to mask poor fundamentals like inconsistent cheek weld.

For me, the handguard is out, because I prefer my optics to be mounted to the receiver. I don't trust optics to keep a good zero on a rail, though it's not usually a big problem for 1x sights such as red dots. So it usually ends up towards the front of the upper receiver, but not necessarily all the way to the front - depends on how big the glass is. Small glass goes further back, larger glass goes more forward.
Settle down, folks. The new "ghost gun" regulations probably don't do what you think they do.

I agree, there is no right answer and it's all person preference.

Generally speaking I found pushing it forward allows my left to get more comfortable. Optic blurs away with less obstruction.

Good example is aiming BAC concept with my TA31F acog. Much harder with the optic closer in.

But yes, run what feels best.

Problem with ACOGs is that the eye relief is extremely short. At least on mine it is. If I mounted mine any further forward than it is (which is as far back as it goes with my BUIS behind it) I'd pretty much have my cheek resting on the charging handle.

Ya, I have the same experience.

The example I was trying to make was using the reticle for both eyes open shooting. Their bindon aiming concept or whatever they call it...

I greatly benefit from extending the stock to get more distance from the optic. Otherwise half your left eye is blocked by the optic. Further away the optic is the better the viewing experience.

No different than with an RDS. Just not as dramatic as its parallax free and allows error in cheekweld.
