Muzzle break for 308

So I have a 700P 308. By about how much will the MB reduce recoil by, and about how much will noise increase? Also, what would be the cost of getting the MB and having a gunsmith install it?

Let's say I wan the most effective muzzle break out there right now.

Wow, you leave a lot of detail open here to make answering your question with any accuracy extremely difficult. That said, I'll take a stab given my situation.

I have a 22" .308 rifle that has a JP Bennie Cooley brake on it. It is "claimed" to reduce recoil in the 50%-60% range. Based upon my shooting it against a 24" equivalent non-comped barrel, I think the estimate is pretty close.

As far as noise, the total output of noise is about the same or perhaps a few dB higher. The difference is in how the noise is transmitted. Brakes deflect sonic energy to the side and back instead of mostly forward so the "perceived" sound levels are much more with a comp. My estimate of "perceived" difference is probably 50% more (if that contains any shred of valid empirical data in comparing the two).

There you go. I think the real question to ask yourself is whether you can handle the recoil of a 308 without the comp. If you can, go without the comp and your shooting neighbors and buddies will enjoy being with you much more. If you can't, perhaps you should look at something with equivalent ballistic performance and less kick (260 Rem, 243 Win).

As to cost, I had Randall at AR15Barrels.com install a Miculek brake on my LR-308. To thread and index was about $90.

We have another batch of KA-1230 brake/suppressors coming in on Tuesday for 1/2"x28 barrels. It installs with an A2 crush washer like they use on the AR15, simply get your barrel threaded and it installs and indexes with a wrench. The brake kit is on sale right now for about $49.50 and getting a barrel threaded runs about $40-50. They are rated for anything up to a 30.06. Here's one installed on a Savage 110 in 30.06
