    6mm Creedmoor Semiauto legal?

I am completely new to guns in Ca and was wondering where I can find out if a Creedmoor 6mm semiauto is legal. Planning to do some varmint shooting in Idaho.

    Thanks

What features does it have? Pistol grip, flash hider, collapsible stocks are all features that are prohibited with a detachable mag semi auto.

Yes 6mm semi autos "can" be legal. Since your talking 6mmCM I'm assuming your looking at an AR10 platform to build on. You can certanily still build a rifle of that nature but have some rules and laws to follow.

As I'm out of CA and I'm not 100% sure what the current law is, I'll let someone else tell you.

The caliber, as long as it isn't .50BMG, has absolutely nothing to do with legality.

.50BMG is the only cartridge that is restricted. Rimfire (22lr) has slightly looser restrictions than centerfire. But otherwise, yes, 6mm is just as legal as any other centerfire caliber.

There are other things that might make the rifle illegal, though. Take a look at the Assault Weapon flowchart linked at the top of this website. If it's an "assault weapon", you can't get it.

I'll summarize. You have 3 ways to get your 6mm Creedmore semi-auto rifle:

        1) If the rifle does not have a pistol grip, a collapsible stock, or a flash hider - commonly referred to as a "featureless" rifle. (a "grip wrap", fixed stock, and muzzle brake are all OK)

        2) If the rifle is not featureless (it has a pistol grip, collapsible stock, and/or flash hider) and it has a fixed magazine. Bullet buttons do not suffice as a fixed magazine anymore, you'll need something like a Franklin DFM magazine that you can't remove without disassembling the firearm action.

        3) If you already owned it before 1/1/2017, you can have all the above features and use a bullet button, but you'll have to register is as an "assault weapon" before the end of the year.

That's the basics. There are other nuances in the law - the assault weapons flowchart covers them.

Settle down, folks. The new "ghost gun" regulations probably don't do what you think they do.

Keep in mind, that chart is only completely useful before 2017. The bullet button info on it is out dated.

Indeed, I edited my post above to help clarify. Aside from the bullet button thing, the rest of the chart should still be valid.
