Co-witness is when the dot in the red dot optic aligns with the front and rear iron sights.
Absolute co-witness is that alignment occurring in the center of the optic.
1/3 co-witness occurs in the lower third of the optic.
For some, this is beneficial in that if the red dot stops working, the shooter can still use the iron sights through the (not-illuminated) optic. The optic is not in the way.
This is usually done with flip-up sights, front can be a fixed sight.
I like 1/3 co-witness in that it leave more of the optic uncluttered with my fixed front sight.
