    Project Appleseed: Upcoming in SACRAMENTO

Been hearing about Appleseed Recently? Want to come give it a try? Missing out on Appleseed at Chabot? Here is your next opportunity in Northern California!

Come out to The Sacramento Valley Shooting Center in Sloughhouse to learn 3 Position Rifle Marksmanship, and the events that led to the American Revolutionary War.

We Teach 3 Position Rifle Marksmanship, Standing, Seated/kneeling, and Prone, with a Sling. No bipods/monopods at this event. We shoot at 25M targets that are scaled to simulate from 400yds. Trust me, this is a GREAT Experience for any Rifle Owner, new or regular to the range, everyone will learn something new.

This is a Two Day Event! Saturday and Sunday, April 8-9 at Sacramento Valley Shooting Center. All Rifle Calibers accepted below 44mag. Cost for the event is $60/adult and $20/youth. All LEO's and Active-Duty Military are $20 to attend.

Really enjoyed the last Appleseed at Sac Valley. This is a lot of fun if you were thinking about going, you will not regret it. Worth the $ and you will learn a lot even for a seasoned shooter.

I would consider another 1 day event like they had at Chabot. Makes it easier for people to justify making relatively long drives to attend.

I was planning to attend. Will have to wait for another, as I tore my left bicep on 3/23. I can not hold up the front of the rifle. I'm sand bagging it for awhile!

                    Attendee's memoirs...

I was there (longest beard there, as I recollect, if that helps anyone remember). Just got back home. I recommend it for anyone who's considering going and hasn't. My back is sore from prone, and I feel old. Never had to shoot prone before, so I need to get into better shape. My best score was 190 (sharpshooter), so 20 points off. They gave me 186, but I found they missed my double hole on a 4 score when I got back, so tacked that on. It didn't change the ultimate outcome obviously. I could not consistently get enough double points on the all-important stage 4. I got 48 on standing (on the 190 total) and could consistently get in the mid-to-high 40's on stage 1. I learned a few things that I need to improve on for sitting/prone, so maybe next time I'll get more 5's.

I started the event with sharpshooter (3 in the 300 sillouette) in redcoats and consistently would get the 300's, though got three in the 400 once. Never could hit that dang 250 box (the shingle), so I'd not have made ol' Morgan's Rifleman. You learn a lot of interesting history from the storytelling, interspersed throughout. Most of it is from "Paul Revere's Ride" (a novel, of sorts) - never read it - sounds like a good read.

The highlight for me was the 13-shot 'volley' in remembrance of the fallen on April 19, 1775. I busted out the Mini-14 on that one and threw brass about 8 shooters over. On the final redcoat I did the same and just shot as fast as I could (and only got 100's, but it was fun). I shot both of those things standing, as it seemed 'right'. Was a lot of fun.

The rain added some grit to it, and gives one an appreciation for people who had to do this (and still do) with the stakes being much higher than we faced. Bring your gear. I used every bit of my rain gear (except the shin/ankle covers, since my boots went up high enough). Wear boots - some good leather ones worked good for me. I had some relatively new Wolverines that I oil treated, even though they said 'waterproof' - threw some neatsfoot oil on 'em a couple weeks ago and they held strong - socks stayed dry.

As one guy mentioned next to me, it was fun, even though you burned through probably half the ammo you'd have done on your own at the range over 2 days of shooting. Several youngsters showed too - was good to see a couple generations shootin'. We even got to see 3 good shooters miss from 25 meters a full-size target with a black powder musket. A lot of respect for people who had to load that thing under duress and then stake your life on it hittin' somethin'.

Don't start the revolution without me...

By the way, I scrolled up and saw the initial picture. That scene looked the same for us, except it was all mud and puddles, even on the second day where it wasn't raining. Those people in the picture in sneakers would have suffered if they showed up like that
