    Why a 10/20 mag?

Because havin' something sticking way out of the bottom of the rifle to hang up on everything, and make shooting off the ground a pain, is "cool"?

    Just askin'.

One reason might be that the 10/20s are required to compete in CMP service rifle matches. Other than that, to maintain the original look of the rifle. M-14s had no other mag available.

In light of other replies, you can get a replacement BM59 hammer from StandardParts LLC for 25-35 bucks. They're temporarily shut down but I got a BR-marked hammer a few weeks ago and it worked out perfect.

The original hammer in my Scout was pretty beat up after about 2000 rounds, particularly where it interfaces with the angled recess at the rear of the bolt. Used M14/Garand hammers can also show excessive wear so watch out!

For now just shoot your rifle as-is before jumping on replacement parts though. If you have any questions the M14 Forum is a good place to go:

Congrats... I love my Socom 2 and I've been itching to get a full size model to go with her. I wouldn't sweat the Springfield parts, mine has eating everything I've fed her. I made the original stock work for me...the best upgrade I would recommend is to shim the gas cylinder to ensure good ferrule pressure on stock.

Nope. All other states without magazine limits are required to use the standard issue type magazines. So, since the points are judged between all states, it would be unfair for magazine banned states to have the advantage of a lower, more comfortable prone position.

The 20s are easier to rock in for me. Good choice on the loaded. It is a wonderful rifle for ca.

I've got a cool 5 rounder too. Great for pig hunting with my NM.

No, cuz you need a handle for shooting offhand.

So, yes, it (10/20 mag) is a handicap (horse race).

                            Thanks again.

One of the reasons I like the M1 Garand. Smooooth.

Try that with your left elbow under the rifle (where it belongs).
