Second Project - Prototype Fixed Mag Doublefeed solution

Some of you may have seen my other project in the works to attach an SGA stock to my featureless Saiga .223 here:

I've also been working on a second project addressing concerns a lot of folks have expressed regarding the new fixed mag configurations and clearing doublefeeds/similar malfunctions. I've created an adjusted geometry spring leaf / base (not sure if either of those is the right term) for the 10 round (and other) Magpul PMAGs.

    Video here:

This is a drop-in replacement part requiring no modification to the mag that makes it far easier to disassemble the magazine while it is fixed in the rifle. (Disassembly can be performed one-handed while the magazine is fixed).

There is also an additional version I've modeled that would perform the same function with magazines modified using the MAGPUL magazine limiters. I'm unsure whether or not I will pursue this second version any further due to limited knowledge on the in-state legality of using those limiters without epoxying them in place. (If anyone has any input or insight on this that would be fantastic).

Cool beans. Been waiting for somebody to work on this. I'd suggest a little more detail/vid about what makes your product an improvement. Watched the vid a few times before I picked up on what you have goin on. Maybe show full disassembly, even clearing a jam. Good work, keep it up. How much?

Incidentally, I'm not exactly sure what the piece you are replacing is called - lower spring attachment point, spring plate, spring floorplate, baseplate insert, locking plate - something like that. I think spring floorplate sounds best.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll be putting together a more informative video over the next few days, as well as getting pricing together, I'm waiting on a quote from a couple injection molding companies.

Double feeds are not possible with a properly functioning magazine.
A double feed is TWO LIVE ROUNDS trying to get into the chamber.

What most people call a double feed is actually a failure to eject.

That's where you have a fired case that did not leave the action blocking a live round from getting into the chamber.

Granted I am not a bench shooter, however I kept accidental release if the floorplate in mind with the design.

You have to both push down and in for the catch to release, as well as push the plate forward in order to pull it off of the mag body. If not pressed with intent, the spring plate still engages the hole in the floorplate and prevents removal. That being said I will test this on a bench to mitigate the possibility even further. Thanks for bringing it up!

This, I understand and agree with. That being the case I made this with the intent of it being a cheap, effective solution for resolution of the malfunction in a timely fashion without the need to remove the rifle upper from the lower while the buffer and bolt are locked in a rearward position.

Sure they are. User error, type 5 malf. Just like in my other post. Shooter rides charging handle forward, extractor never slips over rim. Shooter sees problem, racks another one in. For even more effect try this with the rifle canted up.

My comment on the part would be that if a double did happen then the PMAG is already really easy to take apart. There is absolutely no reason to be in a hurry to take apart a mag.

The real problem comes in for people using 10/30 or 10/20 mags where to floorplate doesn't come off.

I agree with you on that front, it is certainly one of the easier magazines to disassemble, this just makes it that much easier. At least in my personal instance I still have trouble disassembling these easily by hand without some kind of point-ed tool, so I saw a need for something like this.

Just wanted to say I am very interested in this. Would this work with the newer Magpul short 10 rounders? In any case, I'd buy several.

Quick update to the project; a new video showing the updated version in use on the PMAG 10. I've fully developed two types as mentioned earlier in this thread however due to my unfamiliarity with the use of non-epoxied pmags with a blocker, I've decided to concentrate primarily on bringing the the 10-round version to market.

Production en-masse still remains a hurdle however I'm working on it still, the main issue being start-up costs for the tooling. At the price I want to offer these at, I'm not sure if the interest is quite high enough to justify an injection molded part or not. Waiting to hear back from a couple places on production cost to see if it's a viable option at this time or not.

If anyone knows a good place for injection molding, let me know, I'd be glad to hear it!

Yet again, update to the project -

I've got the final tweaks to the design finished, provisional patent status filed, and am currently looking into manufacturing options.
