    Hold open AR?

Several solutions around requiring to break open the action to change the mag.

Could probably pin a sled in the mag well, making it a pure handfed single shot too. But not very compatible with a lower using different caliber uppers.

But,,,,, could a spring be fit under the lower flat of the bolt release, thus causing it to rise and catch on every round? I would think it isn't a semi-auto anymore configured like that. That 'problem' happens when the existing spring to the contrary gets weak anyway. So why not force it to happen consistently?

Guess I'd have to toy with it, but looking for technical 'gotcha' opinions.

Yeah, seen that also. Probably at the very bottom of my list tho. Guess it would keep the action cleaner.
Still, I'd rather it lock open than fail to cycle at all, given the choice

If it still retains the parts for it to operate as a semi-auto, it will be considered a semi-auto.

Do not install/remove the gas tube/piston and block/plug the gas port, so that it won't be considered semi-auto.

I agree with others- if it has a gas tube or a hole for a gas tube.... too risky-

we need to wait for the DOH-J to clarify what law it is that we passed
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
          (thanks to Jeff Cooper)

            Here you go,

barrels without gas ports drilled. I bet they're heavy, though :P

Well I'm not looking for that gas delete option
Simply wondering about modifying the operation of the bolt catch, to catch the bolt on every shot. Probably something similar to the UK "lever release" function, which was their thought to get around their semi-auto bans.

I could imagine fitting a spring under the catch, to always force it up.
I could imagine modifying the catch itself also, if doing so evades your "retains the parts for it to operate as a semi-auto" stmt.

What you are looking into was looked at over the last 17 years and the end result hasn't changed.

gas tube/piston removed + gas block plugged/blocked = manual action (straight pull bolt-action).
variable gas block set to "zero/no gas" = "broken" semi-auto
UK style last shot bolt hold open = "broken" semi-auto

The gas operating system needs to be removed (totally or partially), in order for it to no longer be considered a semi-auto.
                ^partially = gas tube/piston removed + gas block plugged/blocked.
^totally = barrel not tapped with gas port, no gas block installed, no gas tube/piston installed.

Why "toy" around with a semi auto rifle when you can just buy a single shot, bolt action rifle and be done with it?

It is rather nice to have all the build and furniture options from the modular format. And many price points due to competition.
And I really wanted just a couple nice lowers, and then plug on different uppers for different calibers.
But yeah, you make a long term, good point. Not like keeping a legal AR is going to get any easier in the future in CA
