Does anyone own both? How do they compare? I'm close to finishing my AR9 but the CZ caught my attention. Any info is appreciated. If their is a thread asking the same question, just post it on here.

16" 9MM AR vs CZ 9mm Carbine

Have not shot or held a cz carbine, but the ar9, when done right is very reliable and easy to shoot, I had to do some fitting with the magazines and upper reciever. Even. The colt brand magazines had fitment issues, but a whole lot less than the rra magazines. But as far as the gun. Very nice, low recoil.

16" 9MM AR vs CZ 9mm Carbine
I have shot both CZ Evo carbine and an AR9 Carbine. The AR9 I shot was a CMMG AR 9mm upper, on a Anderson Manufacturing lower, with hanh mag adapter, ASC mags, and magpul furniture. It's nice and shot well enough. No FTEs/FTFs. It fulfills the whole AR, milspec, interchangeable parts coolness.
But there is something sweet about shooting the CZ Scorpion Carbine. I managed to go shooting with my friend, and we really enjoyed shooting the scorpion. Downside is that parts are mostly proprietary, but still a very smooth shooter; the hand guard and feel is cool, unique and different. Can't easily replace the handles, or safety, or stock, aftermarket trigger I don't know of any, but it shoots fine.
The AR9 will keep costs down, but a CZ Scorpion is the biznass.Last edited by 357manny; 03-06-2017, 8:48 PM.this is a signatureComment

I have a PSA AR in 9mm (the flavor that uses Glock mags) and a CZ Scorpion, and both can be a lot of fun. In my case they both have ~7" barrels and have been SBR'ed (I'm not a CA resident) but the comparison should still be pretty close.
[Note: when I refer to the "AR" below I am writing about a 9mm AR. I know full well that a .223 AR is an entirely different animal from a 9mm PCC.]
With the AR there is a multitude of aftermarket stuff you can get for it. I didn't go too crazy with mine but I did put on an ALG Defense trigger which is significantly better than the Scorpion trigger. 9mm Glock mags are everywhere, but if you get the version that uses the Colt mags you're probably looking at mail-order only to get more. The function and operation is very similar to a standard AR-15, though due to the blowback operation it won't have a gas system. Reliability has been very good other than a trigger-related problem (not the ALG) that caused it to fire while still partially out of battery... with the ALG it has been 100%. Mine does not have a last round bolt hold open, some of the newer PSA models and other manufacturers do but I don't know about how reliably the bolt hold-open actually works.
The Scorpion does not have nearly the aftermarket support, but there are several shops that provide some cool extras that will work with it. The factory trigger was better than a milspec AR but not by much, so I replaced the trigger springs with an HBI reduced weight trigger spring kit. That helped a lot but it's still not at the level of the ALG. Expect to have to mail-order the magazines unless your gun store has a much more expansive inventory than the ones out here. Magazines are even cheaper than Glock mags though. I have been told that function and operation are kind of like an MP5, though I've never handled an MP5 so I can't say for sure. Reliability-wise it has never skipped a beat with factory ammo and my own reloads, and it does have a last round bolt hold-open. The biggest complaint I had about it was the awful ambidextrous safety. On every shot, the opposite side safety would smash into the second knuckle on my trigger finger, and within 25 rounds I ended up with a deep bruise (as in barely-able-to-curl-my-trigger-finger deep). Some folks have had success with altering their grip on the gun, but there are CZ factory and aftermarket fixes to change the safety lever, just takes a little more $$$.
Somebody else will have to chime in on how involved it would be to make these comply with the latest CA AW regulations. I guess you could possibly make the AR into a fixed mag top-charger, but I don't think that would be possible on the Scorpion.
While I really like the AR, if I had to choose just one I think I would go with the Scorpion. I don't know if I can explain exactly why. It's a solidly-built carbine, fits me well (minus the aforementioned problem with the offside safety), and seems to be the one I reach for more often than the AR.
That's my take on it anyway.Comment

16" 9MM AR vs CZ 9mm Carbine
Hey so for the AW stuff for the CZ, if you got the carbine with the faux silencer, you could opt to go featureless and just put a fin grip and lock down the stock with a screw.
I will say I haven't had a chance to shoot an MPX, which I hear feels more refined than the Scorpion.this is a signatureComment

Probably not important for those trapped behind the iron curtain but yet guys on arfcom all tell me that the CZ will make a way better suppressor host than an AR9. Both are doable but the CZ has less gas in your face.
