    What can I have ...

Assuming fixed magazine centerfire AR style rifle - what features are allowed?

I know we've all been over what you can't have. Just coming at this the other way around...

So just just assuming that I have a finished 80% lower with a Franklin fixed magazine (DFM). So what features can a rifle have?

You can build out your 80 as a featureless (I believe), but you are even going to have to register your "own" serial number.... Soon you'll have to have DOJ issue you an "approved" S/N. We're completely F'd bro!

If you want to build your 80 as a "single shot", I believe you can have whatever features you want..... S/n requirements still apply.

      Assuming further you register ...

It used to be once registered, all features were fine.

That might still be so (except large-capacity magazines, after July 1 2017). But we're still guessing, because CA-DOJ is doing a terrible job with regulations and informing CA residents.

        So let me clarify further...

Can I have a Mil-Spec mag release because it does not do anything with a Franklin DFM? In fact it actually makes the mag less easy to remove (without considerable further disassembly).

Can a fixed mag rifle have a pistol grip? Or is the concept of any centerfire with a pistol grip an AW even if it has a fixed mag?

My lowers already have my serial numbers engraved along with caliber, model, my name, and place of construction.

Just go featureless and let the government guess what you have.

If you have a Franklin DFM in the firearm, you can have any features (and all) that you want. Including the magazine release and including a pistol grip and anything else. It does not require registration (either long gun, or assault weapon).

Do not, I repeat, do not close the action without the Franklin Arms DFM in place though, as you would have a standard assault weapon at that point.

When it comes to the serial number - that's still up for debate - however the general consensus is that by 2018 you will be required to obtain a new serial number from the DOJ and apply it to your home built fixed-magazine rifle, unless it is already in the "registry." You can voluntarily register your rifle now, as a long gun (not as an assault weapon), with your own markings and serial number and avoid having to apply a new DOJ number in the future.

That's what I thought. But my brain is 1.) old, and 2.) constantly confused by the rhetoric I read about going this way and that. The Thordsen guys are going one way. The grip wrap guys are going another. The Hera stock guys are shooting a boat oar ... And yet these commenters do not discuss what OTHER features they have, or plan to have ...

I have a coupe of engraved lowers:

One will be all featureless including a Hera butt stock with fill plate, no forward grip, no flash hider, etc.

The other will have a permanent DFM as long as it's in Cali. It will only be removed during repairs and immediately re-inserted.

Both will be over 30" (full A2 rifle barrel and full length butt stock) ...

Can the featureless rifle have a mil-spec mag release and a removable mag? It will only ever have now 10 round, maybe future 5 round magazines... Whatever the allowed limit at the time.

Neither rifle existed prior to 2/1/17 and neither was planned to have a BB...

These are not really AR's in the classic sense. They are (trying) to be built as Calif legal semi-auto rifles from the ground up. They will mostly be range toys and small critter hunting rifles that may eventually shoot lead-free ammo ... They have some AR profile elements and internal parts, but that's just because of economies of scale when buying parts.

Yes featureless rifles can use a regular magazine release

OK, I'll proceed as planned. Thanks

As I read the regs and discussion, since the rifles did not exist prior to 2017, they are not swept up in the BB group to be registered. And since they are not featured (removable mag unit) or have a fixed magazine, they fall into a "grace period" as long as they are finished by ...

Just trying to be doubly clear, and make sure I have not overlooked something ...

You can take your time. For featureless and fixed mag rifles there is currently no grace period. That is only for newly designated AW which had to have been fully assembled before 1/1/17.

See, I knew there was something I was not seeing ...

When I was in, I had my issued number 113 Hydramatic Div rifle. Since I can't have that as a civilian, I don't really care about the "almost" rifles... That timing is good, I REALLY wanted to avoid the RAW thing and all that angst ... What I want is a reliable rifle or two. Don't give a squat about AW full featured come and take it chest thumping ...

Now I'm thinking maybe a third project as a Southern Gun Company all manual rifle with the side lever bolt release. That one caught my eye ...

                      http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s....php?t=1306658 Post 11 - very interesting ...
