Marines Move Closer to Making IAR New Infantry Service Rifle

I would love to see the contracts and their proposals for this.

The service published a detailed request for information earlier this week asking companies to signal their interest in producing a future IAR. The current IAR is the M27, based on the Heckler & Koch HK416
Among the criteria: The system should accept all Defense Department 5.56mm ammunition, weigh less than 12.5 pounds, and be capable of a rate of fire of 36 rounds per minute.
The Marine Corps is eyeing a purchase of 11,000 new infantry automatic rifles and their accessories as it moves closer to making the IAR the new service rifle for grunts. The service published a detailed request for information earlier this week asking companies to signal their interest in producing a future IAR. The current IAR is the M27, based on the Heckler & Koch HK416.

How many is that for a half-second? At least they didn't ask for barrel shrouds

Lol that has to be a misprint.

If they took .303 British the it looks like the Enfield No. 4 Mk. 2 still has a chance!!!!!!

M27 has had problems with firing the M855A1 ammo.

              Empirical analysis?

It's a well documented issue. A quick search on Google will bring you some info for your edification.

Here's an interesting article re. M855a1 and m27 iar reliability issues. First I read about it. Thank you hooyah for mentioning it.
The Army's M855A1 5.56mm round causes reliability problems in the Marine M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle, testing shows.

I'm thinking the 36 rds/min refers to semi auto sustained fire?
Normal for current M4/M16 armourer's manual specs iirc.

Just checked. Max rate on semi is 45 rds.min and sustained semi auto is 12-15 rds/min.

Hopefully they have plenty of minutes to fight then.

                        Fortunately that's only a spec and not a tactic.[emoji16]
