    Need help choosing a scope

I've been looking at the Nikon m 308 with BDC rectile for my 308 DPMS 10. I've also heard great things about vortex scopes but don't really know what to look for. I'm just an average range shooter and might use it occasionally to hunt with. Any help Is appreciated. Thanks

Go look through them at LGS. Vortex has excellent warranty. Nikon, Vortex, leupold, all good. Good scope will last, dig deep as you can.

I'm really happy with my Nikon .223 and Nikon .22lr with BDC for each caliber. Both are really great for paper and the price point.

Obviously there are better more expensive (Vortex, Nightforce, Leupold, Zeiss, etc)

For me I have begun to just do a sanity gut check on what I will be using it for to decide on how high up the cost ring to go. There are a lot of great scopes under $400. There are many more over $1000.

I'm having the same internal struggle right now with my lever gun. My head says a $129 Vortex Crossfire is good enough. My heart wants a $300 leupold VXII

Measure twice, cut once. I have Vortex here and they are G2G.

For general range shooting it is hard not to look at the Nikon series. I bought a Bushmaster in 6-18X40 for around $320 and it has taken all the LR 308 punishment so far. Good glass and clarity. Now I'm not shooting .5 MOA but good for 1 MOA and hunting.

Your question is akin to asking, "I want to buy a car, I've heard Toyotas are good, what should I get?" with no other information.

What's your price range? How far do you intend to shoot? What's the primary purpose? (and don't say "maybe hunting, possibly home defense, occasionally shooting target long distance, and just general purpose shtf" That's not a primary purpose) Will you be shooting at known distances at a range, or carrying it around? Will you be shooting at dawn/dusk? Is there a specific reticle you like? Turret? Do you need first focal plane or are you fine with 2nd focal plane?

The more specific your answers, the better the suggestions will be. Otherwise it's just people suggesting random scope brands & models which may or may not suit you.

My primary arms 4-16 recommended to me by members based on long range shooting experience, price & durability was $170 direct from them. It is far superior in clarity & the magnification is more powerful (on the same power setting) than my buddies sig-sauer which he paid $190 for. Vortex crossfire2 seems to be highly recommended as well. We don't know it's primary use or your budget-post more info for better responses.

Any suggestions for a shorter, decent 3x9 scope? I would like one at 9" long. I have some cheapos but would like something better that is still smaller.

                          scope

Jimi, Take a look at Nikon's M-223 2-8 x32 BDC scope. Monarch quality glass in a low profile 11 inch long scope. The BDC reticle will let you dial in your rifle, aciope and ammo using Spot On Ballistic Program if you gett he opportunity to air out your rifle.

Soem other choice's for 1more, Nikon has a brand new for 2017 series of scopes coming out. Nikon BLACK SERIES. MOA or MRAD reticle choices, illumination and great prices! I think the most expensive, The BLACK X1000 6-24x50SF Matte Illuminated X-MRAD Reticle is under $650. They just were released to the public at Shot Show so I'm not sure how long until they hit retailer's but the feedback has been great.

I have been using the M-308 4-16 BDC 800 on my AR10 and 2 bolt action .308's with great success but will defintely be adding a BLACK to my most acccurate bolt rifle.

Here's a pic of my wife's dad trying not to like shooting AR's. The smile when he lifted his head up said it all.

Nice stuff but those look 12" long, just like my Vortex 3x9. I love that scope on my AR-47, I was banging 400 yard steel with it out at Octillo yesterday with Tula and Golden Tiger.

I have a shorty 3x9 on one AR. I like the size/weight but would like better glass. 1x8 would also do.

                              scope

Nikon's M-223 2-8 is a very nice sized scope. Compact with a 32 mm obj and the 2-8 will get you on steel at 500 yards. Defintely worth taking a look at.One nice feature is that you can use Spot On to dial in your long distance shooting to your rifle, scope and ammo.
