    AR Mag Issue

So I have found threads related to downloading AR mags so that they will seat with the bolt closed. I am having a slightly different issue. Both my CMMG MK3 (AR 308) and my Frankenstein DPMS/Spikes (AR 15) style carbines will not load even an empty mag with the bolt closed. With the Frankenstein I have tried both Hex and Pmag's which both have the issue. On the AR 308 I don't recall the brand off the top of my head. Is there a way to fix this or am I just stuck with having to open the bolt when loading a mag? I should also note; I have no feeding issues once the mags are inserted.

How hard have you pushed the mag into the mag well? I've had random issues where they won't seat without an extra bit of "enthusiasm"

Also, are they 10/20's or 10/30's? Sometimes the mag limiters take up too much room and won't allow the rounds to be depressed enough to accommodated for the closed bolt

These were random GI Mags that it happened to.

The hex mags are 10/30's the others are just straight 10's. I have tried shoving and tapping with authority with the palm of my hand. I get the issue with to many rounds in the mag and not being able to depress the rounds enough to seat but that doesn't explain a completely empty mag.

        There's your problem.

I know the hex mags are cheap. But that does not explain why I have the same issue with Magpul's mag's.

Assuming you got hexmag series one... they fixed everything with series two.

Check that your mag catch is adjusted properly. Too loose, and the mag will not latch in. Too tight, and the mag cannot be inserted fully easily.

You might have the bullet button installed too tightly. I had this issue with one of the lowers I built so I backed out the set screw a little bit and it fixed it.

Won't resolve the issue if you have gen 1 Hex mags though.

Probably this. Especially with a Franken homebuild. Also, Hexmags are known to not seat properly. Supposedly the 2nd gen Hexmags work ok.

With the CMMG .308 (DPMS based), make sure you aren't using Ruger, Armalite, or AICS mags.
