    Mini 14 ?s

It's my understanding these are California legal. From what I've read Ruger improved the accuracy of them somewhat by going to a heavier barrel about 10 years ago. Will a barrel strut improve accuracy enough on the heavier barrels to justify it's cost? Can the stock trigger be effectively improved? Thanks.

The mini's were redesigned and the factory retooled. They are "Cal" legal. The triggers can be improved.http://www.mini14triggers.com

Not sure if the barrel strut is needed. I would shoot first and see how it does before installing a strut.

I really like my Mini as I prefer rifles built with steel and wood, aluminum and plastic, err polymer, not so much. They run clean and they're reliable as the sunrise, but be prepared, they get no respect here, or on most forums.

The two items that make the biggest improvement in accuracy are a trigger job and installing an adjustable (or reduced diameter) gas block. There's more you can do, but a barrel strut would be on the bottom of my list of improvements.

The one issue that I've heard about, here and other places on the inter-web
(so take that with for what it's worth),
is there may be a problem functioning 100% shooting that cheap steel case (non-reloadable) ammo that some other rifles usually don't have issues with.
But it's not something I have experience with myself and maybe it only applies to the mini-30 ( which is made in the caliber of .762 X 39).

Imho a barrel strut is needed on older rifles, for newer ones, don't think so. Try it first, you may like it the way it is. Like someone else said, another useful mod is a reduced or an adjustable gas bushing

Always liked mini's, never had issues with them. My Aunt has taken multiple deer with hers, including a near 300#er a couple years ago. They are accurate enough and run good, though obviously not the accuracy of an AR. Be sure to get a ranch model so scopes are an option, and use Ruger mags, aftermarket are known to have issues. No I don't think they are worth 800, I wouldn't pay over 600 myself. I paid 400$ for mine a long time ago.

I worked on the trigger of an old model and set it at 4.5 pounds. I like it very much.

This is my sentiment as well. I've owned 3 in the past. Love them and pretty fun to work on since it requires some real work on certian parts. My last 581 Series Mini I purchased a few years ago for less than $600. That was the sweet spot for me. I wish I kept it because it's impossible to find them at that price anymore. If another one comes around, I'll surely consider it.

I do wish that Ruger made just the standard Ranch models with 16" barrels without the flash hider. I know you can special order one, but I think they come with 20 round mags and aren't your standard affair (I'm sure you can ask them to exchange out the mags).

the RUGER Mini-14 would be my number one choice if I wanted a semi auto featureless rifle right now, but Im content with my Russian sks for now.

the mini 14 looks really nice with one of those HOGUE black stocks

On the list. Moved up since the stupid new laws in California passed.
