OP, replace the flash hider with a thread protector or conpebsator/break. They can be bought for as little as $20. Not worth getting arrested over.

Anyone got a line on the cheapest comps/brakes? Don't really wanna spend $80+ on one,
It was just an old plywood boat, with a '75 Johnson, with electric choke. A young boy, two hands on the wheel, I can't replace the way it made me feel.

To OP: FYI, it's not an actual bird cage. That's just a common nickname.

Its sole function (since the A1 version of the 1960s) is to suppress muzzle flash. No 'brake' about it. It's my understanding that the lower-half slits were deleted in the A2 version only to reduce dust signature while shooting prone.

When I go to the range I usually take the muzzle brake off my AK and screw on a thread protector. I do it to be kind to whomever is next to me on the range. Takes about 30 seconds to swap out and the thread protector cost less than $10 from Midway. I don't notice any difference in performance or recoil with or without the brake.

The military calls it a "compensator." I believe it does all three, so still verboten.
