6.5 or 6.8 are more versatile cartridges IMO.

I think most guys who buy 458 socom are in states like CA and they want standard magazines.

Check out the 45 Raptor better ballistics than 450 bushmaster or 458 slocum

Why not just get a 50 Beowolf? Longer range (200 yds) and tad bit cheaper than 458 Ammo.

Naw, you are still looking at a 100 yard range with the .50 Beowulf unless you elevate it like a mortar. But you certainly get a big bang and big holes for your buck!

The 458 SOCOM round looks like a pickle!

Another bump for the Tromix uppers. Makes a great pig gun, like others have said its a shorter range round. I've always read they push out further than a .50 beowolf. FMJ I can generally find online for $2 a round. I'm in Norcal and make a trip to LoadX in Santa Rosa and they sell them pretty cheap as well.

of the 450, 458, 50 choices,,,, more good rifle bullets available on the 458, and the 458 has less specialized needs. Just barrel and bolt.
300 yds is about max hunting distance, with 250 yds probably a decent self-enforced limit. With a 100 yd zero, has about 25" drop at 250 yds and 45" drop at 300 yds. Still nearly 1000 ft lbs energy at 300, but it is also near to the transition to going subsonic at 300 yds. Mileage will vary with the load, obviously. In this case I'm talking about 300gr bullet at 1800fps.

For longer legs, the 6.5 Grendel seems a great choice. More 6.5 than 6.8 bullets available for reloading, as 6.5 has long been a popular choice in the rest of the world. 6.5 is also getting some consideration for military usage. Serbia was looking to add 6.5 Grendel to its armories.

I sorta look at it as,,,,, if you would think iron sights could be fine for your hunting, then the 458 is viable. When you get to thinking you have to have a scope for magnification at the ranges you'll hunt, then something flatter shooting over distance like the 6.5 is needed.

All said assuming AR platform is wanted. A modern 45/70 lever action probably is a better choice than the 458 socom just for hunting
