6.8 has the best hunting ammo available. Black bear are not that tough. 6.5 or 6.8 would be plenty. 6.8 does better in shorter barrels than 6.5 and that makes for a lighter hunting rig.

Hmm. When the notification appeared I thought it said 5.56 was enough for black bear. That had me like what? I thought the bears here were tougher. When I was growing up in PA most people talked about using 30-06 and win mag (don't remember the cal.) for bear. If 6.8 is good for bear though I'm really considering an upper now.

6.8 is similar to 30-30. It gets stuff done. It's not a monster round but it works fine. There are plenty of more powerful rounds but then you are looking at an AR10 or a bolt gun. Budget, get it done a PSA 6.8 will work. So will a used 700 Remington in .308. It's really just what platform you want to use.

If budget is even in your thoughts forget the .458.

I'm just wondering since I own and reload for 6 45/70's. Looks like 2200fps is at its max for a trapdoor. So is it safe to say that most modern loads for a modern lever 45/70 is around 2000fps for a 300gr?
Factory or Handloads? Eithervway, should be well above 2000, as the modern lever action is stronger.

Seems like most factory loaded ammo doesn't even go that high unless it's bb or underwood and they state not safe in trapdoors.
True, and Garrett used to sell their hammerhead for 50/box, and that was 20 years ago. Expensive like Socom ammo.

I'm not saying a trapdoor can't shoot a 300gr round at 2200fps but do you actually do it?
No, I shoot 405s out of my 1895ss at 1800, and 300s out of my contender.

I'd love to see you shoot 100 rounds out of an old trapdoor at 2200fps. My 1886's sport a steel crescent butt plate and I've shoot over 100 rounds out of them in one range session. Not an expert by no means but like I stated I own and reload for 6 45/70's ,2 458 socoms and a 450 Marlin.
That's all good, but the Socom ballistics are at trapdoor level performance, not modern lever action performance. Still quite a feat, given the platform constraints, and I doubt I could come up with anything better. But modern lever action loads they are not.

if anyone want to reload the 458, here is the break down

                Per round
                325ftx, $ 0.65
                lilGun powder, $ 0.13
                Primer , $ 0.03
                Case $0.75 / 7 times reload $0.11

If you already have press and necessary gears, $ 0.92 per round

Factory ammo is loaded low because it can be used in the weak Trapdoors.

So for factory loads the FPS should be same regardless of Trapdoor or modern action, in equal length barrels.

You can certainly handload a lot hotter for modern actions...

Hey gba let me know when you get a trapdoor since a 1895 or a contender are not trapdoors and I'll buy and pay for ammo for you to shoot. This stuff is only 2100fps, should be fine since you claim trapdoors can safely shoot 300gr at 2200fps. I'll record the outcome to show calguners what happens. Deal?

That stuff is sold with this disclaimer: "This ammunition is not to be used in Springfield Trapdoor rifles and its replicas/reproductions."

Yet you advise me to shoot it through a trapdoor?

No wonder you are so confused about 458 Socom ballistics.

                      Why are you so butthurt?

                        .458 SOCOM What's up?

Not butt hurt at all I just like to hear from those who actually own and have fired a trapdoor rather than someone who read something online.

I think random trapdoor ballistics might be better served in another thread.
